Sanderson comment on casting and deviations from books

https://dragonmount.com/news/tv-show/brandontvchangesresponse/

Interesting and does make sense.

It does. Very well put.

Admittedly, the fact that producers and scriptwriters have to make such changes is one of the reasons I wish there was less adaptions and more individual works. But if that involves too much risk for the powers that be, then all we can do is pray for intelligent adapters.

I'm still a little unsure about where I'm going to be with something that needs so much adaption, but time will tell.

Great to hear Sanderson's viewpoint, especially with his additional inside info. Thanks for that!

On the one hand, gosh yes, I agree, I would love to see more original creativity in film and television.

On the other hand, I love seeing the differences in adaptation, especially when changes are made to really make best use of the different medium in telling a story, and seeing what that highlights and throws into relief about the source material. For instance, I really enjoy both film and book of The Prestige, where the story has significant changes from one medium to the other, but both are excellent stories for their own medium where that story would not work so well in the other medium.

On the other other hand, Good Omens was so very faithful, and so very delightful. (Though now I'm thinking of that story Gaiman tells about sticking to his guns and insisting on the sequence of Agnes Nutter's execution being filmed, because he wanted it for Terry, while the execs were like, "I'll be so much cheaper if we do it as woodcut animations." And I enjoyed the filmed version, but the animated woodcuts sound fabulous!)

That's fair enough and probably more rational than me  ;D - just how I'm wired.

And those woodcuts would have been cool. And, for what it's worth, while I've enjoyed the faithfulness of Good Omens in the bits I've seen, I'm not sure its the most gripping piece of TV ever on its own merits, and maybe a more thorough adaption would have been a good idea.

I imagine covid has been playing merry hell with all sorts of development/filming work. Who knows when anything will happen, these days!

Is that really first footage?
They've been doing 5 second spots of like a guitar or a sword or whatever on twitter for ages, and this looks no different than any of the other ones.  I think it's just a clickbait title that's false advertising tbh. Screenrant is officially dead to me.

Is there going to be a lot of sniffing? I haven't read the books, but I hear a lot about sniffing.

I've only read the first book. I need to pick up the pace so that I too can earn the right to make jokes about braid tugging and skirt smoothing and other such things.

I read the first four or five when I was basically still a kid. I enjoyed them then, which leads me to believe that I wouldn't now. There are bloody 14 of them, and it doesn't help (in my case) that Sanderson did the final three.

I don't know, should I give it a try?
