Not sure how I feel.

I would have liked Chiwetel Ejiofor

I don't like it. I don't think Hardy is that great an actor tbh. Though maybe that's Nolan's fault... I've never particularly liked him in any film I've seen him. He's very much not charismatic to me at all.

I wanted Idris Elba xD  Ejiofor would be good too tbh. But come on, Hardy isn't where it's at...

But... but... didn't you see him in Peaky Blinders or Taboo - he was amazing there!!!

Although I see him much more in that era, early 20th century gangster, than as 'suave' James Bond, yeah...

Hardy was excellent in Legend, playing both of the Kray twins. I think he could bring a more dangerous edge to Bond than Daniel Craig did.

I think he's a good choice, especially as they seem to want a harder Bond with an edge now. He's got that menacing feel that the character now requires. I first considered him a possible Bond when I saw him in Inception. He's a good actor as well and I think he'll do the role proud.

In inception? Why? He does almost nothing? Eats some nuts, mumbles at Cob, plays dumb to give him time, then has that one line from the trailer shooting a gun, couple lines of exposition during the heist planning and that's literally it?

From inception, I'd say Gordon Levitt does a better spy.

Overall I see you all basically say "he's such a great period drama gangster" and I reply to you "how is that what we want with James Bond?" I'm already a little bored of JB franchise being so much about jumping off of bridges and getting into shooting matches in the streets. Where is all the spy stuff?

The first 2 Bonds were very much that, that was Terrence Young's vision, then Guy Hamilton came in and had even more success by going with a far more action oriented, gimmick laden route, and that set the tone from then on. Craig brought an edge, not seen since the early Connery's, and I think Hardy will continue that. The fact of the matter is that in the real world of espionage and spy craft, Bond would fail, far too visible and prolific. Work by LeCarre and Deighton, both who have been filmed, cover that. I prefer the fantasy of Bond myself.

I completely understand what you mean about prefering that fantasy... But I am not that enthusiastic about a new bond leaning into the edgyness instead of string a new and different approach. It's 2020... You'd think we could shake up Bond by doing something else that another white guy, but with a heavier jaw, doing the same edgy stuff. Spy stuff doesn't have to be realistic, but the bond franchise is starting to merge into the mission impossible world, with convoluted and increasingly boring storylines too.

I adored Casino Royal... And slowly lost interest in recent years. Was hoping they'd be bold and shake up the concept a little. A black James Bond would have been great to start off.

I liked Tom Hardy as an actor, but well as James Bond I'd rather preferred Idris Elba or Henry Cavill. I'd like to see Bond back to one of the classier types, more like the old James Bonds (Pierce Brosnan and Sean Connery), which would provide a good contrast since we already have 4 movies of the more gritty type of Bond by Daniel Craig.

Connery (especially early Connery) was as gritty as they got. Roger Moore was the one who introduced the smoothness, and injected a lot of the humour (although Connery had the best line when meeting Plenty O’Toole ‘named after your father, perhaps?’). The less said about Dalton, the better, and Brosnan combined Connery’s edge with Moore’s urbanity. I wanted to dislike Craig, because he was nothing like the other Bonds (shorter, blonder, and I still don’t think he ever quite got the voice right), but Casino Royale was so damn good, and he made an early thuggish Bond so believable, then of course we had Eva Green (sigh) as Vesper Lynd (she’s probably just shaded by Michelle Yeoh’s Wai Lin as my favourite ever Bond girl). I’m happy with Hardy, because I think he’ll do really well, but I would have liked to see Tom Huddleston get the role after what he did in The Night Manager.  I found Moore fun at the time, but we really don’t want the franchise to go back to that.

I always thought Craig's thuggish element aligned nicely with the promise of violence Connery carried very close to the surface. Those two are my favourites, and they feel quite similar to me. Moore felt defanged and Brosnan was too standard-action-hero and I just never got into Dalton at all.

OMG 100% behind Henry Cavil, as per his performance in Man from U.N.C.L.E which is the best spy movie I've ever seen that doesn't feature Mads Mikkelsen.

Tom Hiddleston would be lovely too... And Rob Pattinson was the biggest highlight to come out of Tenet. He and JDW had great chemistry as gentlemen spies and I'd have gladly watched more of them and less of the noisy BS.
