Movie & TV News
« on: December 08, 2015, 10:46:10 PM »
I used to be a member on the now closed SFX forum and there they used to have separate movie and TV sections, in those sections I started threads were members could post news, rumours etc on planned films & TV shows. Part of the reason was to cut down on threads started, having one or two posts and then vanishing because there is such a long period between projects getting the greenlight and them actually coming to the big or little screen.

I thought perhaps something like that could work here? So to set the ball rolling...

AMC developing Joe Hill's NOS4A2 http://deadline.com/2015/12/nos4a2-joe-hill-tv-series-amc-1201659223/

Independence Day (II): Resurgence trailer

I mentioned this on Twitter, but I'm curious. Has anyone on the FF forums played Firaxis's recent combat strategy game, X-Com Enemy Unknown/Within?

If you have, isn't the new Independence Day trailer EXACTLY what you'd imagine an X-Com movie would be like? All the way down to the glowy green human weapons (repurposed from alien tech) and the jets/interceptors. I mean, the plots of X-Com and the first Independence Day are arguably very similar, but still. The new ID may be as close to an X-Com movie as we'll get until X-Com 2 comes out.

None of those trailers really excited me.
Independence Day 2 just looks like another way to get more money, with a si-fi movie that doesn't do anything different from all of the others. And Star Trek 3... It's kind of the same way I have felt about the Star Wars 7 trailer. All I know is that they're stuck somewhere without their ship, and they're fighting something. So sounds like your basic action movie plot.
Shrugs.

Now this trailer, excited me. X-Men Apocalypse.

I have played it / am playing it. I'm like two missions short of beating the campaign on Ironman Impossible (and I have no routine in it because it has now been a few months since I last played, so I'm too scared to continue  :( ).

If you have, isn't the new Independence Day trailer EXACTLY what you'd imagine an X-Com movie would be like?
Well, not really. Pretty much the only thing that reminds me of X-Com in the trailer is the modified alien tech (and the part where there are guys with guns running in a dark bunker/corridor). Also, in Independence Day, at least in the first one, the aliens came to exterminate all humans (didn't they?), but in X-Com it's not quite like that. This differentiates the stories quite a bit in terms of how the aliens act and how the humans react. But of course, plotwise, the endgames had certain similarities.

I feel that it would be really difficult to adapt X-Com into a (single) movie because it's so much about doing tons of missions and slowly researching the aliens and their technology. A TV-series (not unlike Stargate SG-1) would work: A secret base, a squad of soldiers going on missions, losses and rookies mixing relationships/things up, some episodes centering on the scientists/engineers/interceptor pilots/Bradford/Big Sky, the rise of the f*king Exalt, the horror of base defense, and so on.
[sighs] That would be great.

Also, a little (more?) off-topic: I usually don't let myself to get excited about upcoming games, but it's really hard not to get hyped when it comes to X-Com 2.

Edit: Added a sentence to hopefully make more sense.

Everything I wrote above is pure conjecture. I don't know what I'm talking about.

I'm a perfectionist but not very good at anything. That's why I rarely finish things.

Guys guys, guyyyyyys, give this one a shot, I recon it'll be a masterpiece :

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRqKieJzCeo" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRqKieJzCeo</a>

Otherwise I'm really not excited by the Star Trek trailer  >:( it looks like a comedy and a fast and furious, bad music and a load of explosions.

Midnight Special also looks like it's going to be an amazing sci-fi, and I adored Take Shelter, so I'll see that in March.

It might be more accurate to say the trailer reminds me of what would happen after X-Com, I guess. At the risk of spoilers (since you haven't completed the game yet :p) it ends in a way that could easily set up the Independence Day trailer. The nations of the world united, having used alien tech to build our weapons and aircraft, because they anticipate the aliens returning.

Also, you are far from the only person chomping at the bit to play X-Com 2. I got to see some preview footage at Firaxicon recently (out here in MD) and it looked very, very good.

Looks interesting. I can't quite tell what it's about though. Something to do with the boy being special?
Hopefully they come out with another trailer that shows a bit more plot.

They do include a description at the bottom of the page :

Quote
In the sci-fi thriller “Midnight Special,” writer/director Jeff Nichols proves again that he is one of the most compelling storytellers of our time, as a father (Michael Shannon) goes on the run to protect his young son, Alton (Jaeden Lieberher), and uncover the truth behind the boy’s special powers. What starts as a race from religious extremists and local law enforcement quickly escalates to a nationwide manhunt involving the highest levels of the Federal Government. Ultimately his father risks everything to protect Alton and help fulfill a destiny that could change the world forever in this genre–defying film as supernatural as it is intimately human.

The Coen's, Clooney and Johansson that's definitely a recipe for success. I'm with Nora, this could be really good.

Interesting news regarding a new 10 part series just ordered by Netflix.

http://deadline.com/2016/01/altered-carbon-drama-series-laeta-kalogridis-netflix-skydance-1201684680/

Altered Carbon is the first book in the Takeshi Kovacs trilogy by Richard Morgan. It is a graphic and brutal cyberpunk thriller with the led - Takeshi Kovacs - a UN Envoy (a future spy/special ops soldier/assassin) in a world where death is near enough non-existant now that humanity regularly downloads into new bodies - called 'sleeves' - when the current one runs out. Because of their training Envoys are not allowed to hold any political office or job of responsibility and so they earn a living as soldiers of fortune.

Interesting reading the article they headline to series as a futuristic drama series conceived, written and executive produced by Logoeta Kalogridis with Richard Morgan's name appearing midway down the first paragraph and then only mentioning the series will be based on his books. This does lead me to wonder if perhaps the series will only be loosely based on the books - characters and some plots - and that Kalogridis created her own show around that.

Whichever way it'll be interesting to see what they do with this, and also how they get around the casting of Kovacs especially if they adapt the other two books.
