I've just watched the first episode of "Lovecraft Country" and wow, it was a great start!
I did jump in places, and was annoyed that I was watching it in the dark hehe

(it also makes the issue of racism very clear, not all horror scenes were with monsters... )

I don't know what it is about me, but I can't seem to watch a newly released series until at least a handful of episodes have aired. Maybe it's a sense of impatience?

I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and was excited to see it brought to the screen. There are significant differences, but on the evidence of the first episode, they’ve done a damn good job, and I’m definitely strapped in for the entire ride.

I actually thought that the whole house/cabala plot would last the entire series, but it was done and dusted (hehe) in one episode?

They're way off book already, but damn it's good! Episode 2 was even better, so epic and all in an hour.

Just watched episode 1 and I'm hooked. J. H. Christ, you go in there for some Lovecraftian horror, and you get your existential dread out of white folk being extra racist and sadistic for so long, I was almost begging for CGI monsters to come around.
That diner scene had me on EDGE. When the monsters did come, the CGI was so-so but the show remained great, the characters carried it imo. I'm very excited for episode two in that distopian, oversaturated colours of a hou trap.

So damn good! @ScarletBea Alex Brown's reviews of the show on tor.com contain some interesting real life incidents that mirror some of the racism that is portrayed in the show. The guy who plays Tic is good, but Jurnee Smollett as Leti is totally owning the show.

And yeah, I've been reading those too - I didn't go read the real-life links last night (when I read the review after watching the episode) because I think those things need light of day and a few hours between them and sleep

I love how they turn the hero trope upside down, and it's the heroine who actually does everything (go first in the plank, rescues the documents, etc).

Each episode seems to be filmed/written in a different sub-genre, yesterday's was adventure/Indiana Jones-type

Yes, it's really cool how they're doing that, and once again Jurnee's Letitia stole the show from under everyone else's noses. And the plank scene was great, so tense.
