My start with Fantasy RPG video games
« on: June 27, 2019, 05:34:54 AM »
I began my love of RPGs in the 80s. My first was Dragon Warrior on the original Nintendo. Second was the first Final Fantasy. I fell in love. And this was long before they started adding in-depth stories and character personalities. Final Fantasy X is still my favorite. I was hooked and bought every one I could find. Those two franchises have kept me coming back over the decades. Currently playing Dragon Quest XI and Final Fantasy XV on and off.

There were a few others that really caught me up. Legend of Dragoon, Lunar the Silver Star, Secret of Mana, and Chrono Trigger.

Was curious if there was anyone else with similar roots. Or at least the same love for Fantasy RPGs and JRPGs.

I'm not sure if they count as RPG but I started with Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale. I loved them both. Then I played Skyrim 3, 4 and 5. I do not play as much as I used to but I wanna dive in to playing RPG games in the near future :)
Kallor shrugged. 'I've walked this land when the T'lan Imass were but children. I've commanded armies a hundred thousand strong. I've spread the fire of my wrath across entire continents, and sat alone upon tall thrones. Do you grasp the meaning of this?'

'Yes' said Caladan Brood. 'You never learn'

I've played a few of those and consider them RPGs. I also don't get to play as much as I used to. I just got a PS4 recently and have been playing a bit on and off when I need a break from writing. But my writing has been on a roll for a while, so the most I have done is a few hours of Exp. grinding every couple nights.

Yes to all of this. Absolutely formative.

BTW, if you haven't already,  you should read Sam Sykes (start with The City Stained Red) and Joseph Brassey (start with Skyfarer). Both authors and their books were *heavily* inspired by Final Fantasy and other JRPGs, as well as more modern fare such as Dragon Age (in Sykes case).

I've just played Diablo and World of Warcraft in addition to warcraft (RTS). Currently playing Zelda in Switch occasionally.

Most other RPGs are more sci-fi.

Have to check them out. Haven't read them yet, but it sounds interesting. I know I have seen a cover going around that looks like a recreation of Terra and Locke from FF3.

I played Diablo 1 through 3. Loved them. Although, I still need to get the Necromancer expansion. Played all the Warcrafts. World of Warcraft was an addiction for years. Daraknar my undead mage. For the Horde! I played all the old school Zeldas but most recent was Ocarina of Time.

Necromancer is my favorite character. Took a week off to play D3 upon release.

You may be interested to know D4 videos were released to Blizzard employees earlier this month.

Well if Blizzard is doing that we should only have another decade or so before we get the first images of in house beta tests.  ;D

FF3 (FF6 in Japan) and FFX were my serious addictions, now it's skyrim:

Never played it, but I listen to Icewind Dale's soundtrack sometimes when writing ;)

But if we want to REALLY got back to the beginning, it's Zork.  Beyond Zork was my favorite of the series.

I finished Final Fantasy XV (The Royal Edition) a few days back and I loved it. It's going to be a long wait for volume one of the FF7 remake.

I also got hold of Greedfall, which is like a game from my dreams because a lot of the series I plan on writing are set in worlds based on the seventeenth century.

Yes absolutely. For games, I started with Final Fantasy III and Legend of Zelda. But I pored over a FFI Nintendo Power player's guide over and over, even though I never had the game. Same with Dragon Warrior, Chrono Trigger and others. I still have all of those guides! I read and studied maps and item lists for more games that I ever played, which I think was a big influence on me spending more time writing the genre than gaming it.

Skyrim pretty much was my childhood. I got into other fantasy RPGs while I was waiting for ES6 to come out. I'm still waiting, but now I don't see how ES6 could top a lot of the others I've played. Skyrim will always have a place in my heart, but I've cooled a lot on the series to be honest.

I'm playing DOS2 right now, and it's actually really good.
