Title: Lovecraft Country
Post by: ScarletBea on August 17, 2020, 10:02:02 PM
I've just watched the first episode of "Lovecraft Country" and wow, it was a great start!
I did jump in places, and was annoyed that I was watching it in the dark hehe

(it also makes the issue of racism very clear, not all horror scenes were with monsters... :()

I plan on giving it a try once a few more episodes are released.

I don't know what it is about me, but I can't seem to watch a newly released series until at least a handful of episodes have aired. Maybe it's a sense of impatience?

I’ve heard good things and I’m excited to watch it.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and was excited to see it brought to the screen. There are significant differences, but on the evidence of the first episode, they’ve done a damn good job, and I’m definitely strapped in for the entire ride.

Have you seen episode 2?
Super weird!
I actually thought that the whole house/cabala plot would last the entire series, but it was done and dusted (hehe) in one episode?

(I haven't read the book)

They're way off book already, but damn it's good! Episode 2 was even better, so epic and all in an hour.

Just watched episode 1 and I'm hooked. J. H. Christ, you go in there for some Lovecraftian horror, and you get your existential dread out of white folk being extra racist and sadistic for so long, I was almost begging for CGI monsters to come around.
That diner scene had me on EDGE. When the monsters did come, the CGI was so-so but the show remained great, the characters carried it imo. I'm very excited for episode two in that distopian, oversaturated colours of a hou trap.

ohmygawd episode 3 :o :o
SO SCARY!!!!
Again, both for the monsters/ghosts and for the truly awful racism so much part of the normal life :'(

So damn good! @ScarletBea Alex Brown's reviews of the show on tor.com contain some interesting real life incidents that mirror some of the racism that is portrayed in the show. The guy who plays Tic is good, but Jurnee Smollett as Leti is totally owning the show.

100% agreed, I'm absolutely loving her, she's amazing!

And yeah, I've been reading those too - I didn't go read the real-life links last night (when I read the review after watching the episode) because I think those things need light of day and a few hours between them and sleep :-\

Jurnee Smollett as Leti is totally owning the show.
... as shown once again in episode 4!
I love how they turn the hero trope upside down, and it's the heroine who actually does everything (go first in the plank, rescues the documents, etc).

Each episode seems to be filmed/written in a different sub-genre, yesterday's was adventure/Indiana Jones-type :D

Yes, it's really cool how they're doing that, and once again Jurnee's Letitia stole the show from under everyone else's noses. And the plank scene was great, so tense.

I only watched episode 5 today - horror week, I had to close my eyes in several scenes :o

And is Christina the original person, or is William? It can go either way, right?

Such a brilliant show, and so well acted and made. I really look forward to watching it each week.

The last episode was both interesting, and also felt a bit filler-ish.

Really enjoyed learning about Ji-an’s background, and what type of creature she was.  I guessed early on what she was, but she’s not quite a true mythological version of it.

But I also was expecting to spend a part of the episode in the “now” of the show, to tie her more into the main story.  I guess we will see that shortly, as she seems to have gone to American now.

^ this.
I just want the now, don't care about Ji-An unless she'll be travelling to the US anytime soon... You say she travelled there? Can't remember that, I thought Tic was calling South Korea.

Maybe I misunderstood the scene, but I thought right at the end she was looking in a window at Tic, but he wasn’t in uniform so I assumed it was now, and they were in America.

Will have to watch it again to make sure.

I just assumed that she was in the US. Partly because the show is set in late 50's/early 60's and calling South Korea would not be the easiest of things to do back then. Episode needed Letty, all the episodes need Letty.

I love Letti, but this episode for me was the best :D
Letti's too young - I totally saw myself in Hippolyta, and despite not having had all the shrinking experiences she had, I understand that feeling absolutely - that's why I moved abroad!

If this series doesn't win all awards and then some, there is no justice in this world!!!

Because its genre, it probably won't win all the awards it deserves, but it should get its fair share, because it's brilliant across the board.

I think Orphan Black got a few awards, too. Couldn’t have awarded Tatiana Maslany enough for me, though.

I didn't like this episode as much - the ghosts/visions were really creepy and I had to fast-forward/close eyes in those scenes. I hope Dee doesn't die :(
But Tic creating a monster of his own? Cool 8)

As a side note, I read Uncle Tom's Cabin when I was about 12-13 and I think I missed all the patronising elements that now everyone mentions. I just thought it was a very sad book and how awful slavery was...

Oh yeah, those curse girls freaked me out. I can see plenty of people binge watching the show when this season is done.

This was an amazing & horrifying episode.  So very epic & heartbreaking at the same time.

And another episode showing the true monsters aren’t the things that go bump in the night.

You're both so right!
Almost every week I'm surprised and horrified at what a human being can do to another human being :'(
And it continues to this day...

And that is truly the most horrifying thing  :'(

Can't wait to see how everything comes together next week for the finale.  So many things to bring back together.

Ruby was doomed as soon as she stayed with Christina a few episodes back.  Christina doesn’t care about anything but herself & her ambitions.

We both wondered what Hippolyta was Mad Sciencing in the bedroom, so very cool it was the bionic arm.

All in all a very enjoyable show (I originally said fun, but that’s not really right with the subject matter)  :o

Yes, it feels strange at times to like it so much, when those things are still happening all around us.

And as I much as I liked it, I hope there isn't another series. It was enough and contained.

I got through a little more than half of it.

I liked the first 2 episodes, then they started to loose me on ep 3.

Also I really disliked Tic starting around ep 3 or 4.  The way he treats Letti just made me mad. There's also this weird thing about virginity that crops up in the show that's kinda... idk I don't like it.

Also... after the Korean War episode... she kills 99 guys and then not him? He deserved it wayyyyyy more than all those other guys!  I was team kumiho.

I did like Letti and the uncle.

Yeah, I was a bit taken aback by some of that as well, but I also think they did a good job of creating interesting characters who were flawed. Tic is driven to save the people around him and has a temper, yet he doesn't see the damage he causes around him as he just barges on, which causes friction and makes some problems worse. Letti similarly doesn't realise how her behaviour affects others, and therefore their relationship is turbulent and sometimes even downright unpleasant. Some things are glossed over that shouldn't have been, but I saw it as a reflection of their relationship.

About the spoiler part:
And yep, she should have killed Tic. I think they failed a bit with setting up the point of that storyline, which I think was supposed to be about them both being monsters and the question of whether they deserve redemption. But at the time they have sex, I also wondered what the hell it was that stopped her, because I sure couldn't see it.
