Title: If you were made into a homunculus today...
Post by: J.R. Darewood on October 17, 2017, 06:18:37 AM
...which one would you be?

I'm not sure if I'd be Lust, Gluttony or Sloth. Given my nature prolly a combo of all 3. Lusgluloth

Bradley, I always thought a homunculus was a devil spawn, evil tiny human made in a laboratory by necromancers or alchemists. But I'll be Sloth any day.  ;)

So the Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood version of homunculi are a bit more badass than the 16th century stuff, but equally creepy (their source was a bit like a creature in a bottle, but it pulled what it believed to be 7 imperfections from itself to create the 7 dwarves I'm referring to...)  FMA was rated the second best anime of all time by myanimelist, but obvi it's really the best.  But that sloth is really cute!

Tipping my hat to any franchise that can make "Sloth" into ... an action villain?

I can't help you as I'm still at volume 12 of the series.

But I think Sloth would be fitting, though I don't know exactly why...

Probably Sloth, seeing as how easy it is for me to get distracted from a task. Though I also tend to get unreasonably angry about things.

Huh. I thought it was known that I'm one of the biggest manga/anime nerd in this forum, but guess not.
I wouldn't spoil people with all the details of the himunculus, especially not "father", but since it's out, I have to say, is not be any of them.. I'd be a homunculus like in the Hellboy universe. Less guilt ridden, a bit more disturbing though.

I do love Fullmetal, and it belongs near the top, but not at the top.
While Fullmetal is is pretty great, it pales into insignificance when put up against "Princess Tutu."

First off the main character is a duck transformed into a girl who transforms into a ballerina to battle enemies to epic fantasy classical music themes.

"Princess Tutu," is twee with twee sauce set in a Fairy tale village. Glimpses of a grimdark scenario show through the holes in the setting. Behind that grimdark setting is an even worse grimdark setting. Throughout the series it is hard to tell who is a good guy and who is horrible. Except of course for Princess Tutu. She is all good.

Just don't watch it dubbed. Great anime dubbed is a sin.

P.S. probably Pride.

Shit sorry @Lanko and @Nora . I was trying not to explain anything but then the gifs slipped out wo me thinking. I just tagged it. Lanko I watched the whole thing by not sleeping or leaving my bed for 3 days it's actually free on YouTube! (Or it was in 2011 when I watched it)

@Nora you're an anime nerd but FMA doesn't seem like your style and those three were in my writing group.
Title: Re: If you were made into a homunculus today...
Post by: Nora on October 17, 2017, 08:33:04 PM
FMA not my style? I think you have a very odd vision of what is my style, if you think I'd not be into one of the best plotted and drawn series ever produced
My book reading does not reflect my manga reading at all, not to mention anime.

I've read the FMA books many times over the years, and watch anime of every sort constantly. I read romance (heck one of my favourite series is a normal romance, MARS), school life, sff (which is super umbrella in manga. But like, Akira, Domu, Fruits Basket...), weird Japanese modern, shonen, seinen, horror, even some good old yaoi or sports and game based manga. Was a fan of Hikaru no Go the moment it hit the shelves, for example.
I even watch and read good trashy stuff like Nanatsu no Taizai and Attack on titan.

I grew up reading/watching CLAMP (Sakura card captor, Knit Rayearth, Chobits, X), Sailor Moon, along with Ranma 1/2 and more mecha anime, Dragon ball, What's Michael (awesome 80s book about a cat), samurai stories (loads of them)...
Huge fan of trigun, cowboy bebop, the good old 90s shit...

Do you know that Hiromu Arakawa, who did FMA, has an amazing ongoing manga called Silver Spooon, about a tokyo boy who gets into an agricultural school just to get away from home and ends up getting into it and changing the lives of those around him? Amazing series.

If you are a fan of "Silver Spoon," you have got to see "Moyashimon: Tales of Agriculture." Another one of my favorites!

You mean, "Spice and Wolf," by Hasekura?

The singer, Natsumi Kiyoura, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HyCUr95LEU (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HyCUr95LEU) is the best since Megumi Hayashibara https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwYawTF-V08 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwYawTF-V08)

Hah! Yes, I know it under Ookami to Koushinryou as a manga, so might have scrambled that. Have not bothered with the anime. When the anime isn't likely to bring a lot to the story I tend to be happy having read the manga. Few boast the dual quality of Akira or the recent Koe no Katachi (your voice). Often the anime is both not as well drawn and not as well plotted.

You are correct, "His and Her's Circumstances" is a clear example of how a manga can be superior.  The first few episodes of His and Her's are brilliant, then it becomes the worst anime in all of history. That said, Miyazaki and Tezuka prove the power of Anime.

I started out a fan of Astro Boy back in the mid 60's so I am mostly an anime Fan who goes to the manga when I have to have more of a series.

Regarding watching it, I'm still on manga volume 12 of it. But I remember I did watch Ep.1 looong ago and it was vastly different from anything that happened in the manga.
Then later I discovered there's 2 or 3 versions of Fullmetal Alchemist animation and somehow the gifs seemed much better drawn and animated than in the episode I watched.

Judging from my temperament and personality, probably a combination of Wrath and Sloth, heheh.  ;D By the way, thumbs up for FMA Brotherhood! It's one of my most favorite animes of all time too. Hearing anyone mentioned it reminds me of all the great memories.

The Gantz that I picked up was a bit more "H" than I was prepared for. My prudish nature keeps me away from a lot of literature.
