This is a spoiler thread but just the be sure...

SPOILERS!!!!

It seems filming of the massive battle in Saintfield Northern Ireland is finally wrapped.

Filming began on September 8th and has gone on for near 5 weeks. After THAT picture leaked security has tightened and the only pictures of late have been from distance showing a lot of smoke (or fog) and a lot of men running at eachother or on horseback.

We know its a big battle involving several Northern houses - some siding with the Bolton's and others against - there seems to be Wildlings involved and of course (POSSIBLY) a certain (POSSIBLY) former Lord Commander of the Nights Watch who may (POSSIBLY) have a different last name now and does not have as many holes in him as he had when last we saw him.

It looks like this battle may surpass Hardholm the amount if time sent on it - longer than filming Hardholm.

Hardholm was a pretty awesome battle, will be hard to top. I hope the new one also features Wun Wun.
I will expand your TBR pile.

Well it seems HBO has dispensed with all attempts at keep the main talking point of S6 under wraps now. Today in the US several billboards have gone up- one in New York, one in LA - and promo shots for S6 released online featuring just one character, Jon Snow. The promo posters also state the show is coming back in April but no date given yet.

As to whether this is Jon Snow or Jon Insert Name Here is up for debate, he does appear to be still wearing his Nights Watch clothes but strangely has blood coming from one eye. It seems strange that if he is dead why would HBO featuring him in the first shot of a promotional campaign?

Excellent! I was just talking to someone last night who was shocked that I thought there was no way Jon Snow would be dead for good. I am thinking maybe since he's still bleeding, it makes sense that he's still in Nights Watch clothes. But, yes, definitely feels like confirmation for what we all knew/suspected anyway. At least readers of the books (the person I was talking to has only watched the show).

"They have no idea what is going to happen...."

S6 teaser, no new footage but....Max Von Sydow people!

I've decided to take the same approach to this as to the new Star Wars movie:
I will no longer watch trailers or read spoilers.
But if Jon Snow is dead, I'll be canceling HBO.

Agreed. The show and the books are nothing without Jon Snow. I love Tyrion, but not enough to continue the books and the show just for him. Daenerys included.
I say that now, but I would probably get sucked in. After all, it would be interesting to see how the White Walkers would be stopped without him. Still though!
This next part has nothing to do with Jon.
I'm surprised no one here has mentioned the two horns. The Horn of Joramun, and the Hellhorn. I know the Hellhorn hasn't been brought into play for the TV show, but it seems like a very, very important part of the story. And I'm confused on what the show's deal with the Horn of Joramun is. In the books, I'm pretty sure Sam has it and just doesn't realize it, but I can't remember if the show even had it with all the obsidian knives Jon found, and what he did with it afterword.
Thoughts?

The Horn of Joramun hasnt been mentioned though they had an opportunity when Mormont took the Watch on on the ranging north. He did say (cant remember who to but I think it was Halfhand) something along the lines of "what is Mance Raydar looking for in the Frostfangs" echoing a line from the books when the whole subject of the Horn was brought up (by Sam I think?). Honestly think theyve skipped over this whole part and will have the Others take the Wall by some other means.

Well, there's probably no shocking revelations here, but rather acknowledgment and affirmation for what we all knew was coming (or rather not coming in terms of Winds of Winter publication)

No surprise at all.  It's telling that he had an October deadline which he thought he could make but now has no idea when he'll finish.   Honestly at this point I seriously doubt I will read any of the remaining books.   While he says the books and shows are going to start diverging I believe they will both contain the same main points as well as the ending.   So if I know the ending and believe the last two books have been a huge drop off in quality I just don't see a reason to go on with the series.

I'll at least try to read book 6, but still. He has no excuse. All of this is his own fault, and he needs to stop messing around and write.

Definitely disappointing news. It sounds to me like the pressure from the added fame and publicity he's gained in the past five years has made him second-guess himself and his writing. Now he is under even more pressure to produce the novel of the century and he isn't certain on how he can do that.

His earlier novels came out so easily and so quickly because he was just another writer at the time. He was able to write the novel he wanted and not have to worry about the expectations of millions of fans.

Suffice to say he has always been a slow writer (one novel in the past ten years), but now with the added pressure it's only making things worse.

To a degree, I'm almost glad the show is going to 'spoil' parts of the novels. It's frustrating knowing that the books won't be able to keep up with the show and that we have to watch the series to find a conclusive ending, but at the same time, if we are looking at roughly a decade or so before the books are finished (which is certainly possible) it's good that we at least have a way of knowing at least the general direction and plot for the end of the novels.

They've already diverged. I think there may be some things that will be hard to tell if they are spoilers or not until you read the books. But other things (like John Snow's fate and consequential course of action) will likely be obvious spoilers.

What I really worry about is keeping track of the divergent story lines when I read the upcoming books, remembering the history of characters and events solely as told by the books versus the TV version. Sansa's storyline is obviously quite a bit different, that one should be easier, but still, I am worried when I got to read Winds of Winter (whenever that would be), that I might "misremember" history because of the differing events in the show.

This. I already had trouble identifying/remembering all the characters he mentions in the article...

I think all of those characters are a big part of his problem.   He keeps adding more POV and secondary characters as the series comes along and it has to be hard bringing them all together.   And really the vast majority of those characters he listed are so minor to the main story arc that I doubt they would be missed.
