I've been voting every day for two weeks for my absolute favourite game this year, Disco Elysium. I really hope it wins something, preferably Best Narrative.

I stayed up to watch the whole thing in the hopes that there would be something to do with Elden Ring. It was, like staying up to watch Bethesda at E3, a mistake. I was pretty bored with the whole thing and now I have to finish an essay all sleep-deprived. I mean, they showed a trailer for FFVIIR, which was nice, but that's a game I'm getting anyway.

Still, it's nice to see Fromsoft get the recognition they deserve, even if Sekiro isn't really my thing and I probably won't get it. They should have won Game of the Year back when Bloodborne came out.

Disco Elysium won Best Narrative

Also won Best RPG, and Best Indie Game

AND the three other categories it was in: Best RPG, Best Independent Game, and Fresh Indie Game! I'm so happy, I definitely needed some good news. It's good to see such a deep and narrative-driven game winning awards!

I take it you would recommend the game?

Yes, very much. But be prepared: it's very focused on the narrative and has a novel's worth of reading. The game mechanics are almost entirely based on the dialogue system (which includes your inner dialogue).

That being said, it's bloody amazing and I can't recommend it enough. Beautiful, haunting, otherworldly. Well-written. I can't praise it enough.

I normally don't engage much with these things but I find myself having to vote again, this time for Hades, which although very different from Disco Elysium in many ways, is an absolutely amazing production from start to finish.

I really love Final Fantasy VII Remake but I have to say I'm surprised it was nominated for best narrative. 17/18ths of the game's story is fantastic, but that ending is just bizarre. I think Hades is the safe bet for that one. I haven't played it but everyone seems to love it.

I think Ghost of Tsushima will win Game of the Year. I don't see Last of Us 2 doing too well. It proved pretty divisive and Naught Dog's style isn't very 'video-gamey' for want of a better term. It has a good chance of best performance with two nominees though. I would like FFVIIR to win, but it's up against Ghost of Tsushima and Hades, so I won't hold my breath.

Well, I was way off. I had no idea that the judges adored Last of Us 2 so much. Honestly, that was really boring to watch. Definitely not worth staying up for. Still, it's nice to know that Disco Elysium is getting a physical release on the PS5.

I think Gundum sums it up well enough.
