Director of the new Star Wars
« on: January 25, 2013, 03:33:42 PM »
Has anyone heard that J.J. Abrams will be directing the new Star Wars movie? I remember that he declined it a few months ago, but apparently, he's decided to take it up.

What does everyone think of this? I mean, I know he only "reportedly" agreed to be the director, but just in case... How do you gals and guys ( See what I did there?  ;) ) feel about this?
Oh, I have a blog.

Check it out, if you've got the time. Much appreciated.

That's cool.   I mean obviously there's the expected "He can't do it, he did Star Trek" and "He already did it when he did Star Trek"     Neither of which is true.    Personally I'd have to see the film, I mean he is one of the better choices out of the dwindling pile of directors we had.

Also,  lensflare joke.  There, got that out of the way.

What I wonder is if he'll use any actors he's familiar with, like from Lost, for example.  Or what if he gets Tom Cruise to star in it?  God, that would be hilarious.  And awesome.

Anyway, I'm personally fine with the choice.  He can't possibly do a worse job than Lucas.  From what I've seen, J.J. at the very least cares about making action exciting, and can illicit good (or decent) performances from his actors.  At this point I think it's more about the writing.

Abrams is competent and he has a track record. As Seregris said it's more about the writing. As long as they can keep Lucas away from the script they shouldn't have a problem.
I will expand your TBR pile.

It's an outstanding choice and I feel confident now that this movie won't suck jawa balls.

Only concern - and it's a trifling one, does bug me that he will be doing both Star Trek and Star Wars, always felt those two franchises should have distinctive feels, and now they will probably feel quite similar.  I think Abrams has made his movies closer in feel to the original series when it was about the friendship between Kirk, Spock and Bones and how they were in effect pioneers.  Newer versions of Star Trek all feel a bit sanitized to me.  Though he has taken them away from the more sciencey vibe they used to have.  The essential difference for me was Star Wars was an epic story that just happened to be set in space, whilst Star Trek was all about space, exploration and science.

The man is a sci-fi guru - Star Trek, Lost, Fringe, Super 8, Cloverfield and now Star Wars. I'm actually really excited by the choice and think we could actually be in for something really surprising (which, at this juncture, is the last thing I'd have expected from the Star Wars franchise).
