Voting this one feels like "Princess Bride or Star Wars?" or maybe "Chocolate or Sushi?"

For serious. Both amazing, both classic, both revolutionary in their own ways. So much intelligent fantasy on the one page.

It's hard that is true, but nothing can ever top Discworld for mine, 2 unforgettable series for very different reasons.
I will expand your TBR pile.

I'm abstaining from this one. I've only read one Discworld book, and really enjoyed it. I read Earthsea, and while it was a good story I didn't really enjoy the writing style.
I wish the world was flat like the old days, then I could travel just by folding a map.

Earthsea was a trilogy for a long time, then a quartet for a long time, and currently it's a sextet. The first four still seem to be published as a single volume in paperback, but I'm pretty sure Le Guin doesn't regard it as a quartet and two spin-offs.

I'm quite a recent convert to Earthsea, having picked up a second-hand Quartet paperback a year or two back. I really loved them, and don't think I'd have appreciated them much as a kid. Amazing use of language. The first one was probably the weakest, for me. It was a bit too rambling. 2-4 are more focused.

But can I vote for it over Discworld? A series I have followed since there were only two books? My standing-order Christmas present for years and years?

I don't really know. I'm going to have to think about this one. (Everyone should read both.)

This is actually painful. How do you choose between these two amazing series? They're so different in style, but both are so well written, gripping, clever, influential and, as cupiscient said, revolutionary in their own ways. Both are absolute favourites - they have worlds and characters that I've loved since I was a teenager and can come back to again and again. Both are so important to the fantasy genre and to me personally.

Oof.  :-\ Such a tough choice.

Discworld.
I buy "Going Postal" for friends and recommend "Wee Free Men" like a drunken Lilliputian.

I desperately want to swap LeGuin over to another pairing. The idea that it dies here in Round 1 while some other series go forward just makes me want to shake someone. Anyone.

The same. Discworld is clearly the winner but sad to lose Earthsea so early on.

Terrible pairing so early on, wish they could both progress further but Isss really enjoy and re- read so many Discworld books makes it my top favourite series overall and I hope its going to make it to the top.

I read the Earthsea quartet last year.
I much preferred books 2-4, like DrNefario, and I think it was because of timing, because I'd already read so many stories inspired by that first that it lost the novelty and surprise of it.

As for Discworld, well, I've read about 10. Throughout the years. And I know that I'll go re-read them and find new things to laugh and think about.

So yes, it'll be Discworld for me.

That's a problem with a lot of the great classics.  Everything that's novel about them has become cliche since.

Had anyone ever done the kid in magic school before Earthsea?  I'm drawing a blank -- the closest I can come is Wart's training in kingship in the Once and Future King.  Perhaps the Sorcerer's Apprentice (by Goethe)?
