So all of those covers I saw while putting together the posts were interesting....
Now that I was able to see them all, are the chosen books really old, from the 70s and 80s? Or are the covers *really* that bad?
 ;D

Most are older.  If you like these then wait to see what I pull up for the ones that advance....

Question Mr. Sci-Fi (@Jmack) - Since you nominated them both what is the difference between Alliance/Union and Chanur?  When I was putting things together last night I saw Chanur being listed as a part of Alliance/Union so I got a little confused.

So, yeah, sort of like the Cosmere, Cherryh connects far-flung stories into one super-universe. Chanur and Alliance/Union exist in the same universe, but each can be read completely without the other. The Faded Sun series is another trilogy that is part of the whole universe but stands alone.

I do think it's fair to separate them: completely separate characters, the only overlap is the existence of humans. In A/U, the story is all about humans, and the conflicts between Sol, the Free Traders, the Union and the Alliance, replete with bio-engineering, economics, etc.; while in Chanur, there is a single human, lost and way out in space, desperately trying to survive among a host of advanced alien races, most of which want him dead or prisoner. He takes up with a feline humanoid race where women are in control and so don't believe him capable of anything except uncontrolled emotion. Beside which, he doesn't have claws.

Great stuff in both series.

The vast majority seems to be indeed from the 80s, with a good chunk of the rest being even earlier.

Just realized that I didn't make it so you can see the results after you voted, that should be fixed now on all of the battles (if I missed one please let me know).

I know its early and I know the people in this forum are generally not heavy sci-fi readers but the vote totals are pretty low.

Has it been mentioned at all in the more frequented forums? I think a lot of people don't often venture outside certain sections, so they might not have realised it's started.

I just made a post in the Currently Reading Sci-Fi thread.   I did post to Facebook yesterday and made some tweets (the main account hasn't retweeted them though),  not sure how much traffic those places brought in with the previous battles.

Sorry you're getting a low response Hedin. I tweeted yesterday and included the main account, but nobody has retweeted. Maybe do a summons here to everyone who nominated  those you have included? Or was it nearly all Jmack in that first round? The only one there I had heard of was Robots, so maybe you'll get more voting as we go on to the next rounds

I don't read enough SF to vote in this. The only series on the list I've read more than one book of is Tao (I have read all of those). And in the first round, the only other book I've read is Old Man's War, but I've not read past that. In the second round I have read more, but once again just the first book.

It could just be that there are a number of people of here like me that don't read as much SF. And if that's the case, this first round is even harder. Out of 16 books, I've only read 2.

Second round, of the 8 seeded books, I've read 1 book from 5 of the series, but not sure I feel like 1 book is enough to vote on.

Does anyone else's opinion count?  ;) 8)

Hyperion only in the eleventh place? What is wrong with people?

And how on Earth, 'The Thrawn Trilogy' didn't get enough votes to get into the voting stage  :(? I thought that we had some Star Wars fans here. Shame to you all!

I love the Star Wars films, but I've never read a single SW book...  :-[

No idea where to start though... a lot of the books sound pretty awful to be honest.  :-\
