IIRC Rurse of Chalion was part of a series.
I liked it a lot, but it's not a standalone, I think.
I would argue that Curse of Chalion is at least as standalone as the TWO Joe Abercrombie books on the list that are set in the same world and feature some of the same characters as the rest of his 'series', and which many would argue you should not read without first reading other books in a sequence (not me, but I've heard it said, b/c spoilers).

Sure, Chalion has a sequel and a prequel, but that's not the same as being part of a trilogy+ incomplete without it's subsequent parts.  The Hobbit has 'sequels', but is still on the list...

i just realized something.

we don't have gemmell on here.  there's no legend or waylander.  isn't that his schtick?  to write standalones, just in the same world and centuries apart?

How many have read Gemmell here? I haven't.

You should, if you can. They're mostly great. I guess they're a bit less visible since he died.

I specifically excluded Abercrombie and Gemmell from my standalone nominations since I'd already nominated them for the series vote, and I didn't want to back linked novels as standalones even if - as with Legend - it was a standalone with sequels, prequels and spin-offs.

No Bujold, no Gemmell...results of this poll/battle are clearly invalid!  :P
