Damn, I'm surprised by how hard it was to put my list. I know I haven't read nowhere as much Fantasy as the majority here, but I was surprised by the amount of brooding lone wolves that dominate the scenario.

1)Nighteyes, from The Farseer Trilogy, by Robin Hobb (OMG, the shock of realizing NO ONE mentioned him yet. Are you people MAD?)

2)Elend, from Mistborn, by Brandon Sanderson

3)Jean Tanner, from The Gentlemen Bastards, by Scott Lynch

4)Arthur, from The Warlord Chronicles, by Bernard Cornwell (The story is told through Derfel Cadarn)

5)Darth Zanna, from The Darth Bane Trilogy, by Drew Karpyshyn

6)Ron and Hermione, from Harry Potter, by J.K. Rowling

7)Practicals Severard, Frost and Vitari, from The First Law Trilogy, by Joe Abercrombie

8)The Direwolves of the Starks, from Game of Thrones, by GRRM

9)Captain Arthur Hastings, fom the Hercule Poirot series, by Agatha Christie

10)Frodo...err I mean Samwell Gamgee, from The Lord of the Rings, by JRRT

Everybody names Ron and Hermione from Harry Potter, but I prefer Neville as a sidekick in that series. Hedwig could also qualify.
I will expand your TBR pile.

In no order (obviously):

1) Matrin Cauthon (The Wheel of Time)
2) Nighteyes (Realm of the Elderlings)
3) Vivacia (Realm of the Elderlings)
4) Paragon (Realm of the Elderlings)
5) Lady (The Black Company) (she's a sidekick after the first three books)
6) Bronn (ASOIAF)
7) Brand (The Shattered Sea)
8) Nicomo Cosma (Best Served Cold)
9) The Nuban - Broken Empire
10) Jean - Gentleman Bastards
11) Moiraine - The Wheel of Time
12) Lan - The Wheel of Time
13) Egwene - The Wheel of Time

Early prediction about the winner: Jean

Star Wars counts as science-fiction, right? Zannah is awesome though.

Best Star Wars sidekick is definitely Mara Jade.

Wouldn't have said Mat was a sidekick myself but... Lan is? Why didn't I think of Lan?

Nope, he isn't (in my opinion). But Lan and/or Moraine are great suggestions. Seconded!

Seconding also:

Angua - Discworld (Sir Terry Pratchett)
Nanny Ogg - Discworld (Sir Terry Pratchett)
Jimmy the Hand - Riftwar (Raymond E. Feist)
Min Farshaw - Wheel of Time (Robert Jordan)
Ka-Poehl from Powder Mage.

Technically you're firsting them since I've already named 20  8) I'll edit that mofo in a moment to make space for them.

I'm too lazy to think of new names, so I went through all your posts and second the following:

Childermass - Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell
Samwise Gamgee - Lord of the Rings
The goat - The Vagrant
Nanny Ogg - Discworld series
Sebastian - The Copper Cat trilogy
Nighteyes - Farseer trilogy
Jean Tanner - The Gentlemen Bastards series
Vivacia - Liveship Traders trilogy
Paragon - Liveship Traders trilogy
The Nuban - Broken Empire

Mudge from Alan Dean Foster's Spellsinger series is almost the very definition of sidekick.
I will expand your TBR pile.

When I saw a thread for sidekicks one name instantly sprang to mind, and as he hasn't been mentioned yet I've de-cloaked from my lurking status to post. My suggestion is:-

- Moonglum of Elwher, companion to Elric of Melnibone (Elric, Michael Moorcock)

Other than that I agree with a few of those already put forward (namely Samwise Gamgee, Jean Tannen and Silk), but would also add:-

- Bannor, Bloodguard assigned to Thomas Covenant (TC, Stephen Donaldson)
- Batik, Hellborn refugee who fights alongside Jon Shannow (Wolf In Shadow, David Gemmell)

And a couple of non-human suggestions:-

- The Luggage, property of Rincewind (Discworld, Terry Pratchett)
- Oy, billy-bumbler and member of Roland Deschain's ka-tet (Dark Tower, Stephen King)

@Vizhigoth...

Bannor and Thomas Covenant.
Great stuff. Great character.
