So of those that I have read I view Hermoine, Karris, Jez, and probably Arya (it's really hard to figure out prots from series with a large cast) as more secondary characters than prots.

Maybe it would be easier then to just do 2 battles, favourite goodie character and favourite baddie character...

But in a book with an expansive cast like ASOIAF there isn't a protagonist is there? I went for Arya as she along with Tyrion, Dany, Jon & Ned are the more popular leads in those books.

I'm also going a little over my 20. Sorry!  :P

FitzChivalry (Farseer, Robin Hobb)
Sparrowhawk / Ged (Earthsea, Ursula le Guin)
Tiffany Aching (Discworld, Terry Pratchett)
Vimes (Discworld, Terry Pratchett)
Moist Von Lipwig (Discworld, Terry Pratchett)
Death (Discworld, Terry Pratchett)
Locke Lamora (Gentlemen Bastards, Scott Lynch)
Sophie (Howl’s Moving Castle, Diana Wynne Jones)
Jez (Ketty Jay, Chris Wooding)
Crake (Ketty Jay, Chris Wooding)
Frey (Ketty Jay, Chris Wooding)
Basso (The Folding Knife, KJ Parker)
Cathy (Split Worlds, Emma Newman)
Wydrin (Copper Promise, Jen Williams)
Tyrion (Song of Ice and Fire, George RR Martin)
Brienne (Song of Ice and Fire, George RR Martin)
Daenerys (Song of Ice and Fire, George RR Martin)
Sansa (Song of Ice and Fire, George RR Martin)
Harry Potter (Harry Potter, JK Rowling)
Bartimaeus (Bartimaeus series, Jonathan Stroud)
Lyra (His Dark Materials, Philip Pullman)
Westley (Princess Bride, William Goldman)
Sonea (Black Magician series, Trudi Canavan)
Vin (Mistborn, Brandon Sanderson)

I agree that Hermione seems more like a support character than a protagonist in the Harry Potter series, simply because this series so obviously has ONE main protag. With others, I'm not so sure. I think anyone with a POV is arguably a protag in ASoIaF. I would definitely argue that Jez is a protag in the Ketty Jay books. It feels to me that there are 3 main protags in that (Frey, Crake, Jez) and the support chars are Malvery, Silo, Harkins, Pinn and Slag (the cat). But perhaps this is just too subjective - I think if the person nominating thinks their nominee is a protagonist then we should probably count them?  :)

I halfway agree and halfway disagree.  Characters like Dany, Jon, or Tyrion are definitely protags in my book, they are the key players.  But then someone like Davos or Brienne are more secondary in nature (in my opinion anyways), they support the story and events rather than really driving them.  Of course with ASOIAF if we actually had an ending to the story all of that might be much clearer.

After just finishing Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb, I would also like to add Fitz to this list!

Quite a tricky one to think through, but here are a few early ideas:

1. Conan - Conan - Robert E Howard
2. Elric - Elric - Michael Moorcock
3. Vimes - Discworld - Terry Pratchett
4. Logen Ninefingers - First Law - Joe Abercrombie
5. Thorn Bathu - Shattered Sea - Joe Abercrombie
6. Locke Lamora - Gentlemen Bastards - Scott Lynch
7. Ged - Earthsea - Ursula Le Guin
8. Jon Shannow - Wolf in Shadow/Jerusalem Man - David Gemmell
9. Druss - Drenai - David Gemmell
10. Jorg - Broken Empire - Mark Lawrence
11. Quentin Coldwater - The Magicians - Lev Grossman
12. Vin - Mistborn - Brandon Sanderson

There are probably more if I can think of them in time. That's why I've numbered them. I'll start from 13 if I make another post.

1) Kvothe - Name of the Wind (Patrick Rothfuss)
2) FitzChivalry Farseer - The Realm of the Elderlings (Robin Hobb)
3) Althea - Liveship Traders (Robin Hobb)
4) Jon Snow - A Song of Ice and Fire (George RR Martin)
5) Rand al'Thor - The Wheel of Time (Robert Jordan)\
6) Vin - Mistborn (Brandon Sanderson)
7) Vaelin Al Sorna - Raven's Shadow (Anthony Ryan)
8) Logen Ninefingers - The First Law (Joe Abercrombie)
9) Inquisitor Glokta - The First Law (Joe Abercrombie)
10) Monzcarro Murcatto - Best Served Cold (Joe Abercrombie)
11) Father Yarvi - The Shattered Sea (Joe Abercrombie)
12) Jorg - The Broken Empire (Mark Lawrence)
13) Croaker - The Black Company (Glen Cook)
14) Rodrigo Belmonte - The Lions of Al-Rassan (Guy Gavriel Kay)
15) Aragorn - The Lord of the Rings (John RR Tolkien)

NB: Liveship Traders don't have a clear protagonist, but Althea is the first POV in the trilogy. Jon Snow is one of the two main protagonists in ASOIAF. The First Law doesn't have a clear protagonist, but Logen and Glokta are arguably the most important characters in the trilogy, with Logen being also the first POV. Father Yarvi is the protagonist of the first book in the Shattered Sea trilogy, while it is a very important character in the following two books. Belmonte is one of the two-three protagonists in Lions, while Aragorn is one of the two main characters in LotR.
