Your year in books 2018
« on: January 07, 2019, 02:38:51 PM »
@DrNefario's comments on the goals thread reminded me of this thread from last year - here's the 2018 summary.

Some people just link to their Goodreads page, I don't have GR so here's my LibraryThing summary year in books:

Number of books read: 43
Number of fantasy/sci-fi books read: 25
Total pages read: 17,331 (average of 403/book)
Total fantasy/sci-fi pages read: 12,575 (average of 517/book)
Biggest book: 1,187 pages (Memories of Ice, Steven Erikson)
Smallest book: 48 pages (We should all be feminists, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie) or for SFF: 198 pages (In the Vanishers' Palace, Aliette de Bodard)

By women: 14/33% (or 7/28% of SFF)
By men: 29/67% (or 18/72% of SFF)

Plus 98 stories of 1,500 words at the Monthly Contest, a total of 147k words = 420 pages (at an average of 350 words/paperback page, according to google), which is an extra book!

Some of these actually surprised me, and it was a bit less than last year.

Here's a useful link for anyone looking to get their year in books off of GR - https://www.goodreads.com/blog/show/1452-celebrate-your-2018-year-in-books

I'm still rooting out the books I read but forgot to add there.

@Alex Hormann, with those numbers you destroyed my consoling thought that if you were reading so much, it must have been small books ::) ;D

Oh well, this isn't a race, I've read as much as I could and/or wanted, so there...

@ScarletBea Not short books, but a lot were easy reading. Forgotten Realms books in particular are easy to breeze through. Anthologies also help fill in the gaps.

2019 might well be slower for me. I'd forgotten just how dense the language of Malazan could be.

I don't use GR either. My tracking is spread across a handful of google docs.

Number of books read: 103
Total pages read: 32,447
Average pages/book: 315

Biggest book: 1236 pages (Judas Unchained - Peter F Hamilton)
Smallest book: 28 pages (Pandemonium: The Right of Spring - Jared Shurin (ed))

By women: 34.2 (The 0.2 is the Lost Lore anthology. I count editors for anthologies, and this one was credited to The Terrible Ten, two of whom were women, by my count.)

Books Acquired: 120
Of which started: 39
Paid: 69
Borrowed: 17
Free: 34

I'd forgotten just how dense the language of Malazan could be.
And the time you spend re-reading past bits to understand things better, or referring to the character, warrens and decks lists ;D

Oooh another interesting statistical bit!

Bought: 25, of which 6 in charity/second hand shops
Borrowed from Library: 18

(I don't know how many were paid/free because of book vouchers and rewards I've used)

Read 36 books last year, which would probably be my all time highest amount of books read in a year for a very longgg time. https://www.goodreads.com/user_challenges/10965029 (I'm growing all the way busier and have depleted the works of most my favorite authors, hahah  ;D)
