Your favourite character partnerships
« on: April 02, 2012, 06:01:34 PM »
Looking at the early post on your top 3 characters, I got to thinking that many of my best characters were great, not just through their own accomplishments, but because of the characters around them. A good character is never a solo act. All good things come in two's and that jazz.

A few I thought of were:

1. Tehol and Bugg (Malazan, Midnight Tides - Steven Erikson)
2. Kalam and Quick Ben (Malazan book of the fallen - Steven Erikson)
3. Kvothe and Elodin (Kingkiller Chronicle - Patrick Rothfuss)
4. Kaladin and all of Bridge 7 (Stormlight Archive - Brandon Sanderson)
5. Drothe and Bronze Degan (Among Thieves - Douglas Hulick)
6. Kylar and Durzo (Night Angel Trilogy - Brent Weeks)
7. Llian and Karan (The View from the Mirror quartet - Ian Irvine)
8. Gotrek and Felix (Warhammer - William King)
9. Waxillium and Wayne (Allow of Law - Brandon Sanderson)
I saw them on the shores
the deepening pits of their gaze
vowed immortal war
against the sighing calm
of Jaghut seas . . .

My immediate thought was Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser.  I'd also nominate Mary Gentle's Valentine and Casaubon.

my favorite is Toc the Younger and Tool.  i really like the relationship between Mappo and Icarium also.

If their's one thing Erikson seems to be a master at, its partnerships. Cutter and Apsalar, Karsa Orlong and Torvald Nom, Iskaral Pust and the Bhok'aral, Bauchelain and Korbal Broach, Fiddler and Hedge, Trull Sengar and Onrack to name a few of my favourites. And I've only just started The Bonehunters, I imagine there's so much more to come.

I immediately thought of Farfhd and the Gray Mouser, followed by Locke Lamora and Jean Tannen.

I would also like to add:  1) Pug and Tomas (Magician, Riftwar Saga, Raymond E. Feist)
                                  2) Lessa and F'lar (Dragonriders of Pern, Anne McCaffrey)
                                  3) Legolas and Gimli (LOTR)
                                  4) Lirael and Sammeth (Old Kingdom trilogy, Garth Nix)

Also Rincewind and Twoflower from Discworld

Another vote for Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser here. I'll also put in a good word for Alec and Seregil from Lynn Flewelling's Nightrunner series - a partnership in more senses than one ;)
Elizabethan fantasy trilogy The Alchemist of SoulsThe Merchant of Dreams and The Prince of Lies out now from Angry Robot Books!

Yet another for Fafrhrd and the Gray Mouser. Also, see Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg from Discworld.
I am NOT short. I'm further away than I look.

Maybe they're not strictly fantasy, but how about one of the original bromances in Robin Hood and Littlejohn? Along those lines I'd also like to include Tyrion Lannister and Bronn. I love Locke Lamora and Jean Tannen, but I'm kind of hoping that becomes a trio with Republic of Thieves.
I will expand your TBR pile.

Just finished The Alloy of Law and Wax and Wayne are absolutely great. At least as great as Locke and Jean.

Ged and Arren in The Farthest Shore, although it's not an equal relationship.  And, for one of the most gloriously successful mismatched pairs, Jherek Carnelian and Amelia Underwood in Moorcock's Dancers at the End of Time.
