Everything I wrote above is pure conjecture. I don't know what I'm talking about.

I'm a perfectionist but not very good at anything. That's why I rarely finish things.

A good cover doesn't make up for a poor story...  :P
In this case I'd say that the cover (and author name) lured me in, but the charm did not hold long.

I think that might win. It's not bad on the eyes or anything, but it tells you absolutely nothing about the book.

I've just seen Philip Jose Farmer covers  :o thanks to Mark Hodder who I'm following on Goodreads

I don't think these are really bad covers. I think they are actually pretty good covers. But for Lord of the Rings?

The eye in the ring, sure. But those worms? And pigeons?
And why, oh why, this green?

This is what would be for many Germans the definite edition of Lord of the Ring. Instantly recognizable. But there's something very wrong with them.

It's not quite as garish under natural light, but it clearly stands out from everything else on your bookshelf and you can identify it from the other end of a train car.  ;D

Yep, kinda iconic. I have them too (the new translation sucks, so I advise everybody to go look for the old ones).
