The Violent Century by Lavie Tidhar
« on: November 20, 2013, 10:18:16 PM »
I was recently in attendance at a Pandemonium talk in Blackwells on Secret Histories and met Lavie Tidhar. Not a writer I knew before (though since discovered he wrote the outstanding short story on London pubs in Pandemonium's collection of short stories about Dickens' London. )  After a recommendation from Idlewilder I bought the Violent Century and got it signed. And then proceeded to share a smoke or three with Lavie whilst getting quite pissed over the next couple of nights.

Anyhow. Violent Century is superb.  There has been been plenty of imaginings of what the 20th century woild have been like with superheroes but not many in  novel form.  And this really is a very very good novel.  Lavie is a superb writer with halting, short sentences interrupted with beautiful pieces of poetic prose.  The historical knowledge and trickery is very clever.  And last of all, it brilliantly and very hauntingly brings home just how violent and dark the 20th century was.  Also very very interesting how differently the British and Americans use their ubermenschen.

I'm going to be reviewing this for Fantasy-Faction in December. I can't wait!

Was it the ubermenschen that sold it to you?

I'm reading this now and already love it with the unusual writing style.
I'm Saloninus, by the way. And I tell lies, from time to time. Which goes to prove the old rule; never entirely trust a man who talks about himself in the third person.
