Who is looking forward to Ruin?!?!
« on: May 06, 2015, 04:46:47 PM »
So one of the best and certainly most exciting new fantasy series I have had the pleasure of reading is definitely The Faithful and the Fallen by John Gwynne, so far consisting of Malice and Valour. If you want to know more about the individual books check them out here

http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/5898355.John_Gwynne

It has been ages since I first read them so details are a bit hazy especially given the volume of books I go through but I remember the last 150 pages of malice building to an epic climax and when Valour came out I remember reading it finishing each stint absolutely knackered! As a single book Valour is probably the most exciting book I have ever read, it keeps its insane pace for some six hundred odd pages! The man himself is a great chap, always happy to talk about his work and an all around Gent!

Ruin, the third instalment of four books is due out on July 16th and I can not wait! I'll probably reread the series to refresh my memory.

GIMMIE GIMMIE GIMMIE!  :D :D :D

I'm excited for it. I struggled a bit with Malice, but then it really picked up at the end. Valor, on the other hand, was one of my favorite books I've read this year. I feel like Gwynne fixed all the issues I had with his first book. If he grew that much between books 1 and 2, I can't wait to see what he does for book 3.

I know what you mean about malice, though I didn't so much struggle with it the book definitely took a step up toward the end. I find fantasy fiction usually takes a while to get going. It seems we are both agreed on Valour  ;D Bring on Ruin!

These are on my wishlist, glad to hear good things about them!
If the 3rd is coming out in July, then I'll wait until I can read them all in one go :D

Yes, God yes. This series has been fantastic. It and the Anthony Ryan series are the ones that I most holding my breath for.

Does anyone else feel like this series is a more modern and gritty take on something like the Belgariad?

Sadly I have not read the Belgariad. I will however add it to the list  :)

Careful, maybe it's better if you don't read it.
It is a nice enough story, but basically it looks very simple and straight forward and a bit naive nowadays, too...

That said, I read it just a couple of years ago and still enjoyed it, hehe

Now I know it exists I'll end up reading it at some point. I cant leave books alone once I know they exist. I heard mixed reviews about Melanie Rawns Dragon prince and Dragon star trilogies, more bad than good to be honest and other than more purer than pure romance than I could take I actually really enjoyed them. Thanks for the heads up though!  :)
