The seagull in Watership Down is a good guy though.  And not very bright.

Watership Down - Kehaar

And Mariel of Redwall was nicknamed 'Storm Gullwhacker"!  So sea gulls were clearly 'bad' in those novels.... though they prove quite useful in James and the Giant Peach.  Sadly in both the latter two examples, seagulls seem not to have much intelligence assigned to them.

I never read Kehaar as stupid as such, the black headed gull proved very useful. I'm not sure what the accent was meant to be (it was bloody hard to read), but as Adams based him on a Norwegian resistance fighter from WW II, it was probably an attempt at some sort of Scandinavian accent. I wondered why the field mice spoke with exaggerated Italian accents (they may not in the film, but they certainly did in the book).

Elementals: Gnomes (earth), Undines (water), Sylphs (air), salamander (fire), Dryads (vegetation) and
Fauns (animal life). Of course if you go elemental that means more nymphs (there's supposedly about 13 different types) and giants.

Seanan McGuire's Toby Daye series features undines and dryads, as well as a kitsune and a peri. Ce'Nedra from Eddings Belgariad and Malloreon was half dryad on her mother's side and there's a whole bunch of them in one of the books. George RR Martin has giants in his ASoIaF series, too.
