Shame is not needed young friend. Science fiction and Fantasy are not nearly the same. Both fantastic, yes. But not nearly the same. I mostly read Science fiction. But it is my occasional wanderlust into the Fantasy genre that brought me to this place: fantasy Faction. Which deserves much kudos for there Science fiction support.

Have fun reading H.G. He wrote a damn good book. Enjoy!

It was and it's really messed with my head considering the year he wrote it and how futuristic it felt. His grasp of things felt far beyond his years!

I doubt it will be my last sci-fi outing, but since I'm currently writing fantasy, it's only sensible to absorb myself in it for the time being. I won't be copying, too far through the worldbuilding and plotting for that, but it's good to know the competition  ;)

One day though, I can almost guarantee I'll end up writing some sci-fi in an attempt to pay homage to the fantastic shows like SG-1 and Babylon 5. The themes and underlying messages in those are what draws me to sci-fi in much the same way as I get drawn to fantasy. Both genres are true explores of the famous best question for writers - "what if?"
"That which is imagined can never be lost." - Clive Barker

Finished Fortune's Pawn by Rachel Bach. This book was just plain fun, and that's how I like my science fiction. Fast-paced. Lots of action and mystery. Kickass main character.

Oh, good to know - I've had that one on the wishlist for a while, might need to get it now  :)

I'm currently reading Heinlein's The Door into Summer.

Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey, my first SF book in ages.
To have an idea is not enough - no matter how good the idea is.

Actually I just started a YA SF by Sophia McDougall Mars Evacuees. You have to love a book that as as it's opening line: When the polar ice advanced as far as Nottingham, my school was closed and I was evacuated to Mars. She mentioned it at a panel at Worldcon and I was so hooked that I went out and bought a copy in the dealers room.
I will expand your TBR pile.

Just finished reading The Martian by Andy Weir.

I adored this book, every word of it.  One of the best books I've ever read.  Would recommend it to anyone and everyone.  It's gripping, laugh out loud funny, well-paced, brilliantly written and emotional.

The Martian was quite a fun book! :)

Over the weekend I read Ethan of Athos and Labyrinth by Lois McMaster Bujold, both of which were very enjoyable.

Now I'm reading The Myriad, the first of R. M. Meluch's 'Merrimack' series, and so far - 200 pages in - it's been great fun.

Finished The Myriad.  The final quarter of that book elevated it from being 'merely' good to being brilliant, for me.  As a result I'm straight into the sequel, Wolf Star  :)

Recently I finished On Basilisk Station by David Weber. Not the best writing in the world. A few too many infodumps. But I enjoyed it overall.

I also finished The Player of Games by Iain M. Banks. It took me a while, but I really started liking it toward the end.

I've started on Cibola Burn by James S.A. Corey. This is a great series, and this one looks to be pretty good so far. They always start a bit slow, then build toward a great climax.

Finished Cibola Burn. Another great entry in the series. Probably my favorite so far. In this one, I actually liked the new POV characters that were added, especially once I got farther into the story. As usual, there was a good amount of action, and the characters were handled very well. One of my favorite space operas.

Once I finish Republic of Thieves, I'm likely moving on to Ancillary Justice. I've heard nothing but good things. Really looking forward to this one.
