I'm currently in Short Story mode... reading through short stories. Hound seemed to be pretty positive about Swords and Dark Sorcery so reading through that right now... very hit and miss I think!

After the rather brilliant Prince of Thorns which I whipped through in 2 days, I started Elizabeth Mock's Render last night, good so far!   Grin

Started Jane Gaskell's The Serpent, which is the first of her Atlan series. It's very interesting and written in a different style. I'm surprised that more people aren't aware of Gaskell's work, although that could be caused by the fact that she hasn't written a lot since the 60's.

Finished The Serpent, interesting book, probably published about 30 years before audiences were ready for it. For all that I enjoyed it, I'm not minded to read the rest of the series, one reason is they'd be hard to find and secondly I don't think the main character (it's written in first person) has enough to carry more than one book. I've just started Myke Cole's Control Point, and wow that really opens with a bang. He drops the reader right in it from page one. I've only read one chapter, but I have a good feeling about it.

I've just finished The White Road by Lynn Flewelling, and am contemplating reading The Steel Remains by Richard Morgan - started it ages ago but got distracted, so I want to give it another go.

I just finished Fated by Benedict Jacka which was absolutely bloody brilliant! Am now re-reading King Rat by Mieville. I love this book. Saul's (the protagonist) descent in to the rat world of London is enthralling and arguably one of the best examples of urban fantasy to be found anywhere right now.

Recently I read books 2 and 3 of the Skulduggery Pleasant series (which I know someone here will be happy about) and then started on Jacqueline Carey's third trilogy, starting with Naamah's Kiss. Got about 200 words in and enjoying it, but then Gail Carriger's Timeless came in to the bookshop early and I couldn't resist starting that instead. Cheesy

Wiseall, I saw Fated in the shop and thought it looked interesting, glad to know it's good! Smiley

Still reading Control Point, damn that's a good book, mile a minute stuff the entire way through so far. I'm breaking normal transmission to mention Discount Armageddon by Seanan McGuire. I read this a few weeks ago, but that was an ARC, and given that the book was still more than a month away from release at the time I didn't think I should mention it until it was a little closer to release date. It now is, so I can talk about it. I've also put a review up.

I'm just starting "Red Seas under Red Skies", because I loved "the Lies of Locke Lamora", and I know I only finished it this afternoon, but I have to know what happens next!

I finished Theft of Swords this morning, that was a thoroughly enjoyable romp. It's rather refreshing to read something where the bad guys and the good guys are clearly defined and that the author hasn't felt pressured to put in events or language for shock value or to make it seem something more than it is.

Glad you liked it Elfy. I've really enjoyed the series (wrote all of them before publishing the first one) so I was able to weave a bunch of threads before the whole thing concludes...and it really does condlude with Heir of Novron - my personal favorite of the series.

I'm going to start Black Company - primarily because of some comments here earlier in this thread.  Looking forward to it.

I currently just finished reading the Dark Elf Trilogy and Ultramarine omnibuses that I got for Christmas, which is part of the reason why I seem to be a bit behind when it comes to my reviews, ironically. I finished Druid of Shannara before that and right now I'm splitting time between Elf Queen of Shannara and The Blood King by Gail Z. Martin. I liked The Summoner if memory serves me right, and I've had this book in my collection since my local Borders closed down, but I haven't gotten around to reading it yet. I don't know what I make of it yet, but I do know that I'm going to have to reread The Summoner just to see if my memory is that good. It has been years since I read it, so maybe I'm wearing my Glasses of Rose-Tinting +2.

As for the Dark Elf and Ultramarines I don't know if I'll do a proper review on those yet. I liked them well enough, but perhaps I need some time to digest them.

I hope you enjoy Black Company, Michael. I was lucky enough to meet Glen Cook at Worldcon in Reno and he was a really nice bloke. There's some excellent stuff in Black Company and Glen was really breaking some new ground when he wrote it.

Working on Elizabeth Bear's new one - Range of Ghosts now. Very impressed so far.
