I've started The infernal batallion, book 5 and last in Django Wexler's first series.
I'm already seeing things are going to get very bad before they end up (hopefully!) well, and I want to read quickly, but at the same time I'm not able to concentrate for longer periods... oh well.

Dragon Mage (Rivenworld #1)
- ML Spencer

A coming of age story in the line of John Gwynne's Faithful and Fallen series but only with dragons.

The prose is good and pace taut and has enough twists and turns to keep it interesting till the end. Author has a GRRM style of ruthlessly disposing characters with violence being understated yet brutal.

The characters are a bit standard and there are a couple of plot mechanics that fail the logic check, but apart from that a good read.

Recommended. 7/10

I have to speak up for a book I quite randomly bought based solely on that it was recommended to me by Amazon, its title, and the fact that it was very cheap (as I'm short on book money at the moment).

It's called A Wizard's Guide To Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher, whom I've never heard of before. It's a plucky, funny fantasy book about a teenage girl who knows some very limited magic that she can only apply to baking. Despite the light-heartedness, it does a good job of maintaining a balance by creating drama and tension.

The title along with the first line: "There was a dead girl in my aunt's bakery," pretty much had me sold, and it hasn't disappointed so far (I'm about a third of the way in). I found it a welcome break from epic sci-fi and grimdark fantasy.

This is one I wanted to read as well! I've got paperbacks that I've had since 2004, and some classics I've had since about 1991...

I've been reading Deadhouse Gates, and was reading the Battle of Sekala Crossing yesterday and found it to be confusing as hell. There's so many types of troops, and I can't imagine the landscape of the battlefield visually, and couldn't place where the ford, the armies, roads, and bridges are supposed to be. I've went to the Malazan wiki to read up on it but that only served to confused me even further, hahah. Does anyone have a link to diagrams/ images that depicts the battle in its entirety and is easily understood?

Not really - I just go with the flow.

The series I'm reading has quite detailed battle scenes (circa early 19th century) and they keep mentioning "2000 soldiers here", "4000 soldiers there", I have so much trouble imagining so many people...
One thing that did help was when I visited the Royal Armouries museum in Leeds and they had a recreation of the battle of Agincourt, both with little figurines and then in a computer with all the movements. Suddenly many things I'd read in fantasy books made more sense - but it's still hard hehe
