Just finished Sabriel by Garth Nix.

Would never have guessed Nix to be Aussie, he writes in such proper british English... All but for the one sentence where a soldier appeal to his fellow "blokes" and another aussie slang word after that.

Brilliant book. 6/5. Loved it. Can't believe I had it sitting on my ereader all these weeks without knowing what a gem it is.
There are 5 of these books too... So now I'm reading Lirael, the second one in the series.  :-*

Bloke is totally British slang.

Now I'm not sure if I should go straight into Emperor's blades, and after all the comments see if it's a DNF and get it out of the way before having to renew the library check-out, or go read book 2 of a series I like first... ???

From everything I have heard the next two books after Emperor's Blades are a lot better.  The first one wasn't bad just a little meh for me.

Huh. I've heard a lot of people saying the series drops after the first.

I just had to DNF Rainbows End, by Vernor Vinge.

The first book I've ever to DNF. I really tried, but nothing in it worked for me at all and I really tried.

I think I'll do that, yes, but in reality it doesn't make a big difference because I read book 1 last year when it came out, also at the library.
It's by Rebecca Levene, who I believe is part of the 'pornokitsch gang', hehe
(@pornokitsch, is that true?)

I'll have to go find a 'memory refresher' online, about what happened in book 1, though...

Hunter's Kind is so good! I know where my vote.

Bex writes for Pornokitsch - reviews Marvel movies! Although she took a break as she got stuck into Book 3. We can also claim Becky Chambers of The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet - she writes game reviews for us, which are hilarious. Although she took a break so she can write Book 2. Silly authors with their actual priorities!

I finished Hope and Red (which I didn't quite hate, but also really didn't love) and Voodoo Killings (which was fun)

Getting ready to take a little break from fantasy and start Infomocracy (SF) and Hex (horror)

I have that book. It's fascinating, you'll enjoy it!

Did you mention living near setting of Broken Homes? I got an e-mail message re mention and then couldn't find it and can't tell who sent it ?

If so, should make it even better reading. I had never seen Heygate as it was built after I left UK, but I remember the old Elephant and Castle area, used to drive through when first had a car and driving lessons. Can't believe how brave I was then.
This is why I like this series so much, I recognise many of the places mentioned.  I worked ten years in and around central London but lived in many different shares further out.

Indeed! I'm liking it very much and was totally baffled at the Havamal poem, which looks like a Norse mini-version of Baltasar Gracían's Art of Prudence (don't know if you read it, if not, do it!).
I guess some advices about life are truly immortal, but probably wasn't expecting it from the Vikings!
