Just reread the Dirk Gently novels for the first time since being a teenager.  Now reading Varjak Paw, as it is our literacy book for next term.  Features a ninja cat.  The kids should enjoy it.

I think Steelheart had a better overall plot (in terms of character motivation), but I liked Firefight even better because of all the revelations toward the end. Steelheart could be a complete story on its own. Firefight doesn't stand alone quite as well.

I finished V.E. Schwab's Vicious. That was a really interesting book, kind of compulsively readable and a very different look at the idea of super powers. I picked Cinder by Marissa Meyer out of the TBR pile. Cinderella as a cyborg mechanic in a furturistic Asian inspired setting. There's been some good buzz about this series, and it's started off interestingly.
I will expand your TBR pile.

I can agree with that. The end was very good. And Firefight definitely doesn't stand alone as well. I also think sometimes I really  enjoy the back story of how a character becomes what they are, I really enjoyed that aspect in Steelheart, and it may be part of what pushed it ahead for me.
