Way of Shadows (Night Angel trilogy + spoilers)
« on: April 07, 2015, 06:35:49 PM »
I just hit chapter 15 and I feel like I have no idea what's going on. Is this how everyone felt by chapter 15?

I'm starting to wonder if I should continue reading. I care about Azoth and sort of care about Durzo, but I can't seem to really care about Logan, Solon and the Gyres. Where did Solon come from? Why is Logan so accepting of this stranger? And they're plotting against Logan's mother? With a stranger?

Does this take place in a Japan-type setting? I'm just really confused and uninterested at this point. Does it get better? Less confusing? I'm relatively new to fantasy and this is the first book I've read where I'm not sure if I want to continue.

I'm not sure how far in I read (might not even have reached chapter 15), but I didn't get it either. I might pick it up again at some point, but only if I've got nothing better to read... which doesn't seem likely!  :P

I struggled with it at first but I stuck with it and enjoyed it

I can't remember what was chapter 15 (I'm too lazy to go check) but I really enjoyed the whole trilogy right from the start. It moves along quite quickly and it's got some great twists. However, if it's not for you, it's not for you. I think there are too many books in the world for someone to waste time dragging along if they're not getting it, not enjoying it.
If you have to ask, it's because you should move along, in my opinion :-\

For me his second series (not yet finished) is even better, in terms of magic system, plot, action, and characters.

Edit: I decided to go check what was 15 after all - it's only around page 100, barely the beginning. So I'm going to change my advice and ask you to give a few more pages...

Seems Overlord loved it  :)

http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/fantasy-book-discussion/most-emotion-you-have-ever-thought-whilst-reading/msg12447/#msg12447

The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks, Shadow's Edge by Brent Weeks and Beyond the Shadow's by Brent Weeks

All of them had moments where I felt really emotional. Not just about deaths and losses, but about decisions and love and everything really. The reason I love that series is because it is just full of emotional conflict and if the reader can get involved in that then I think they will probably leave it feeling it is one of the best series out there.

Not Pornokitsch though... he doesn't like it. Therefore he does not have emotions or read the wrong book... he can choose which ;)

Feed I guess was hard, but I think because someone told me 'oh God... the ending', I was always expecting something to happen like that. So perhaps that switched me off / prepared me a little bit for it. It is amazingly well done.

I loved it as well, Eclipse ;D
I said/thought at the time (and even more after reading the second series) that Weeks is an improved/grown-up Sanderson - not sure if I'm being heretic or what...

I loved it. All the strings do eventually tie together. Logan is important and he is very likeable.

I think I'll listen to ScarletBea and stick with it for a bit longer. I mean, I'm sure I'll get answers, but I don't remember having such difficulty at the beginning of a series, like I have with this one.

Just checked, apparently I read up until chapter 35, roughly 45% in. Do I have a seal of approval for giving up on it?  :D

Only if you tell us which fantasy book has made you the most emotional  :D

Hmm... definitely one of the Realm of the Elderlings books by Hobb. In the sense of emotional meaning truly invested in the characters and really caring what happens, Hobb stands out by a mile for me. Kinda sucks that there's nothing else that quite reaches that level, it makes me very impatient with a lot of other fairly decent books...  :P

In terms of scenes the one in Fool's Errand probably wins - if you don't know the one I mean then either you're heartless or you haven't read them all yet and you've got a hugely emotional scene to read in the future! I also found what happened to Verity incredibly sad, not sure if there's a specific scene for that but the last bits of the first trilogy always make me feel really melancholy.

Special mention also to His Dark Materials. The ending is ludicrously sad, though I felt it was spoiled a bit by the fact that there should have been legitimate ways around it which were just ignored.

I really enjoyed this series, and it does get better after Chapter 15 so I'd read on a little further before deciding. And I would also agree that as a writer Brent Weeks keeps getting better with his new series.

Bumped to say: I'm really glad you all convinced me to keep reading. I'm about 75% through with the first book and it has really picked up and become a LOT more enjoyable. Cheers!

Yay :D

Always happy when someone else enjoys a book I've liked - and you know, the series only gets better!

That's always nice especially if it's not a much read book it's like OMG you've read it as well, I thought it was only me who had read this awesome book!  :)
