Title: Riyria Revelation Series
Post by: S. K. Inkslinger on July 13, 2020, 10:35:36 AM
Hello guys I have a question for the series. I've read the first book in the Riyria Revelations like a year or so ago, and well to be honest Michael J. Sullivan's writing style was really putting me to sleep, so I skipped all the chapters that focused on characters beside Royce and Hardrian's POV. I managed to finished the book thinking it was kinda good, but when I started the second book I wasn't able to make heads or tails of anything happening.

So, do I need to go back to reading the parts of the first book again (which almost bored me to death last time), or could I just read some summary from Wikipedia and move on with the same way towards the second book? If I hadn't bought the entire series I guess I would've DNF'd the other books, but I've already bought them so...

Do you have the omnibus books? That is the full Riyria Revelations series is 3 books, each with 2 books inside?

I read those 5 years ago but each of the 'double books' is almost a standalone, with everything coming together at the end, I think.

Maybe you can try reading the first again and check if it still bores you? You might bfeel differently now - I really liked them.

It's the writing style. I had no idea how, but Michael J. Sullivan must've put in sleeping pills between the pages of his books or something. I could barely bring myself to feel interested with all of the issue between the princess and the church empire something or whatever too. I do kind of like Royce and Hadrian partnership though, so I wouldn't want it to go to waste.

It's 6 books published in 3 volumes. Book 1 Theft of Swords actually has Theft of Swords and Avempartha books contained in it. Have you read both?

Book 2 Contains Nyphron Riding and Emerald Storm) has focus on the queen and her maid a lot and continues on from book 1.

Book 2 has a lot of important soft content. So imo you can wiki up book 1 and continue.

Oh I've read both Theft of Swords and Avempartha (Combined book 1). I'm having trouble with books 2 (Nyphron Riding), and no wonder what's with all the stuff on the queen. Could I skip this and still understand the third book?

Riyria books are mostly self contained plots with some threads/characters tying various books together. Book 2 introduces some key characters and develops others.

It's possible to read book 3 directly, but then you'll have trouble connecting the dots. Not impossible but just sub-optimal.

If you weren't impressed with book 1, then I don't think others will interest you. But since you seem interested in Royce/Hadrian, then I suggest you continue what you did with book 1 and skip/speed read books 2 and 3. Completely not reading would 2...nah, i'd not recommend that.

There are thousands of good books/series out there. I loved Riyria, but if you didn't why try to go back to it?

That sounds good. I think I'd go with the speedreading/ skipping route, hahah.

Well, I guess it's between that point of indecision in a book that's too good to be DNF'd, but also too unenjoyable to completely read every page of it. I do enjoy book 1 after I've skipped all of the princess part though, so there's that.

I've only read the first prequel (Crown Tower). I thought it was light and breezy, but fun. A lot like the older D&D novels. If you want to spend time with Royce and Hadrian, then the prequel has that in spades.
