Recommendations for a returning wanderer?
« on: February 23, 2013, 02:27:58 PM »
Hi all.
For the first time in 23 years I took a break from fantasy fiction and I have missed the genre enormously!
(What a stupid idea  :o)

I've just devoured Robin Hobbs' Dragon Haven in about 4.3 seconds and it was utterly delightful - like walking into a room filled with long lost friends, chilled wine and crackling log fires (plus Dragons... so a BIG room on reflection).

I'm woefully out of the loop. Can you recommend new releases from the last 12 months so I can plug this awful void? I have never wandered off before, and let me tell you... IT'S UGLY OUT THERE!  ;)

Last 12 months? Hmm. It is awards season, so it may be worth looking at what books have shown up on the lists for Locus, Nebula, the BSFA or The Kitschies, as well as all the titles getting recommended for the Hugo or BFS.

I'm just guessing starting with the Robin Hobb, but maybe the recent books by Naomi Novik, Anne Lyle, Brent Weeks, Rachel Hartman... possibly even the newest Joe Abercrombie? (Although if you've been taking a break for 23 years, perhaps better to start with the first Joe Abercrombie. Or George RR Martin's Game of Thrones!)

You've got a lot of good books to catch up on! Welcome back!

From the last 12 months. I' ve become a big fan boy of Gaie Sebold so would recommend Babylon Steel by her. Have you read any Mark Charan Newton yet? He has recently completed a four part series. And we are all big fans of Mark Lawrence and his Empire of Thorns series here.

PK - Thankyou... I've read FF for 23 years and have only taken a 12 month break so not TOO big a gap to plug I hope?  :)
I'll check out the lists - I'm already a fan of Weeks and Abercrombie so you seem right on the mark.

Hound - Mark Lawrence is being purchased as we speak, I'm not familiar with the other authors you mention but I will check them out.

Much appreciated! x
