I dont think the hobbit counts as it was written before Lord of the Rings but as a film it will count cos it is being filmed afterwards.

I would have to go for The Steel Throne by Edward Bolme - the prequel to a fabulous Japanese-inspired series called The Four Winds Saga.

Read it!

The Ring of Solomon by Jonathan Stroud.

Overall through I’m not keen on Prequels as you already know how the character’s  journeys end up, unless I really really like the characters and just want more.

I can't remember reading any prequels except the Riyria Chronicles (of which I've only read 2 books of the 3 - the third wasn't published in the UK).
I really enjoyed them!

I thought of the dark elf trilogy by R.A . Salvatore

It was completely different to Ice Wind Dale as it focused on Drow culture and their goddess  while Ice wind trilogy was more of a quest type journey.

I see the author is now up to novel 33 with Drizzt  the legend books.

I always come back to The First Chronicles of Druss the Legend.  Works great as a standalone or as a prequel to Legend.

I really enjoyed the Tremontaine serial as a prequel to Swordspoint.

I'm still trying to find Backup (a novel of the Dresden Files from Thomas's perspective), and the prequels to the Powdermage novels. They all seemed to be available only on kindle and ebook though, and I usually only read paperback.  :'( I wish someone would print out a collection of these prequels like they did with Brandon Sanderson's Legion series.

I believe those prequels/shorts were self-published by the author. I've read one of them, I quite enjoyed it! I believe he did a very short physical print run as well, hand-numbered and all of that. I assume if there were the demand, a trad-pub compilation could happen, but I don't know that he sells in that sort of numbers (unlike Sanderson...)

@S. K. Inkslinger Inks, Backup is in Side Jobs the short story collection from the Dresden Files. I only have it on audible but if you can't get from library or get a copy let me know and I will try and find one or photocopy the story , my son may have it in print.
From Goodreads list of all Dresden short stories in Side Jobs:
Here, together for the first time, are the shorter from Jim Butcher's DRESDEN FILES series — a compendium of cases that Harry and his cadre of allies managed to close in record time....

Contains:
+ "Restoration of Faith"
+ "Vignette"
+ "Something Borrowed" -- from [book:My Big Fat Supernatural Wedding|84156]
+ "It's My Birthday Too" -- from [book:Many Bloody Returns|140098]
+ "Heorot" -- from [book:My Big Fat Supernatural Honeymoon|1773616]

There's also been another collection of Dresden shorts in Brief Cases, so if it's not in Side Jobs, it may be in the second collection.
