Potential FF Grim Gathering in the UK
« on: August 23, 2019, 06:27:08 PM »
@G_R_Matthews and the facebook group are running a poll there about locations for Grim Gatherings and which authors we'd like to see there!

I thought I'd ask here as well, and hopefully he'll add these results to the main one...

For me, any place more or less central to the UK is best, as I'm bang in the middle.
The last 2 were in Bristol, so I'd prefer for it to happen elsewhere.

Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, to mention big cities only, are my favourites.

As for authors, all the usual big ones from the last times, but also Anna Stephens, John Gwynne, Cameron Johnston, Jen Williams, Ed McDonald, ...
He asks about "grimdark" authors, but in my opinion we could open it further (even if the name seems to link with grim...)

Much as I think everything should happen in London to suit me, somewhere around the Brum-Leeds-Manchester triangle is friendlier to everyone. Bristol is a fantastic city, but it shafts people even worse than London for getting there.

Also... I reckon opening it up beyond grimdark authors would be a good idea. RJ Barker is the most fun author on twitter so I'd nominate him, but it'd be nice to see some indie authors there (even if I know literally no British indie authors beyond GR).

Hey all,

It is called a Grim Gathering, but I'm keen to open it up to more than just Grimdark because that is really just a label that everyone argues about.

As for location, one I can get to and organise is easier... however, if you club together for air fares and hotels, I'll be happy 😀

As much as I can sympathize with those wanting it in their locality. Someone has to organise and arrange a hundred little details no one ever notices. Thats why it's easier to do closer to home. If you want it on your doorstep offer to pitch in and help.

Funnily enough, I was coming to post that if it's Leeds or Manchester I can help organise, as I can go there on weekends.

I also thought of Adrian Tchaikovsky and Tom Lloyd (and I second RJ Barker - I haven't read him yet but would definitely like to).
I'd like to have Aliette de Bodard, but as she lives in France it might be difficult, hehe

While something at the armories would be very nice I think they would charge heavily for space there. Got a venue in mind?

Waterstone's.
Leeds has got a huge one (3 floors, including the Costa area), and they do events there regularly. It would also be good for them because they could sell books by the authors who attended.

The one at Manchester Deansgate is also a very big venue - as much as I'd love to have something at the beautiful Central Library, hehe, and I also love your idea of doing it at the Armouries, maybe with a sword fighting display and all ;D

If we don't want to charge tickets (at least not much)/pay for a venue, a mutual advantageous deal with a bookshop is the best option.

What I'd like to do... if possible... I can dream... is run a few throughout the year.

1 Bristol
1 Norwich (its out of the way, but that's half the reason)
1 Derby/Nottingham

1 London - maybe, but it is more costly

I suppose Nottingham feels really far north...

I'll be simply a potential attendee for some of those locations, then.

I feel attendence will depend on which authors as much as cost and distance. The centre of the England pleases no one and still upsets the Scots. Travel beyond a certain point makes little difference, its a long journey you are taking or not.
