Title: List of LGBT characters in fantasy recommended by Fantasy Faction Members
Post by: Eclipse on May 14, 2016, 11:11:37 AM
This is not a Discussion of LGBT in Fantasy, there are other topics for that please go here if you wish to have  discussion about it http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/fantasy-book-discussion/lgbt-fantasy/

This topic will just be a list of book's and authors recommended by Fantasy Faction members over the years as we now getting a lot of people asking for LGBT characters in their fantasy reads, please add to the list if you come across a good story featuring LGBT character's thank you.

I would like this topic to be a sticky  ;D

*Honourable mentions

Faithful and the Fallen by John Gwynne *

(...) write such a close 'friendship' that the reader can read more into it if they want.
I'm thinking of two specific examples in books read recently: Nathair and Veradis, in Faithful and the Fallen (John Gwynne), and Cayden and Mieka in Glass Thorns (Melanie Rawn). I see them as being in love but not really knowing or realising, maybe someone else will just see good friends.

Top list!  ;D

Small note: Sebastian is a main character, so he appears in all three of the Copper Cat books, not just the first one. ;)

SM Stirling

Lesbian Black coastguard captain and her Celtic Partner in the Island in the sea of Time trilogy as the protags.

Lesbian ninja asassin x2 in the Emberverse series one becoming GrandMarshal of the protectorate forces and incidental gay knights etc throughout the series. However the most interesting relationship is between two teen girls whose lives would be so much simpler if they were gay. Oh and a society who is pretty much ambivilent about anyones sexuality with no religious moors to get in the way of anyone falling into bed with whom they choose.

Thank you for putting that long list together, Eclipse.

A Gathering of Shadows by V E Schwab introduces a previously unknown gay relationship, which existed in A Darker Shade of Magic but was not apparent. It would be a spoiler if I named the characters, but becomes clear once you know, and will have great effect for future in series.

David Gemmell's Quest for Lost Heroes features a gay couple.

(Do people want to know which particular sexuality the characters are/whether they're main, supporting, villain?)

Eclipse, I suggest you remove The Faithful and the Fallen series from your list.

I believe I was the one who mentioned it, and what I said was actually
(...) write such a close 'friendship' that the reader can read more into it if they want.
I'm thinking of two specific examples in books read recently: Nathair and Veradis, in Faithful and the Fallen (John Gwynne), and Cayden and Mieka in Glass Thorns (Melanie Rawn). I see them as being in love but not really knowing or realising, maybe someone else will just see good friends.

A sticky would certainly be great.

And the list should definitely include The Sorcerer of the Wildeeps by Kai Ashante Wilson.

And... are we only doing epic/world fantasy, or urban fantasy too? If urban, then we should include the Shadow Police series by Paul Cornell: London Falling, The Severed Streets, and the forthcoming Who Killed Sherlock Holmes?

Hollow World by Michael Sullivan -  it is Sci-Fi/time travel, but that shouldn't discount it.

I loved her double act with Javre

I think this thread is more for the list than discussion, but I just read an amazing piece in Robin Hobb's City of dragons, that I wanted to highlight.

It's book 3, and we now have a (male) gay couple living together (let's call it characters A and B, not to give out spoilers). A teenage boy (C) is having some problems with a girl he's interested in.

C: "But she's a girl, girls think about these things. Don't they?"
An incredulous smile spread slowly across A's face. "You came here tonight to ask me for advice about women?" He turned and looked pointedly at B. "Are you sure you came to the right door?"
C looked uncomfortable. "Well, who else can I talk to?" (...) So I came here. You, both of you seem happy. (...) And it can't be that different, can it? People being jealous, people being in love."

And that's it. A then tries to help boy C. Totally normal, totally human, and hardly ever seen in books or tv :)

Yeah that side of things was definitely the strongest part of those books. Glad you're enjoying them! (http://boincstats.com/image/emoticon/happy.gif)
Title: Re: List of LGBT characters in fantasy recommended by Fantasy Faction Members
Post by: ScarletBea on September 25, 2016, 11:17:28 AM
I'm loving them ;D

I guess my point is that sometimes there's this idea that to have diversity in books, namely sexual diversity, you need to show the characters having sex, when it's completely not about that.
Title: Re: List of LGBT characters in fantasy recommended by Fantasy Faction Members
Post by: Raptori on September 25, 2016, 11:40:55 AM
Yeah exactly, that's by far the least important part. What matters is how it affects the characters' lives and how they deal with it, which Hobb does brilliantly imo.  :)

I'd say we could even more of that normality in real life as well :)

Haven't read Robin Hobb in a while, but you certainly put me in the mood for it now, that book sounds nice!

@Saraband (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=32607), I can't remember if you've read Liveship traders, but that trilogy should be read before this one (Rain Wild chronicles) - just to avoid spoilers.

And @Rostum (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40251), still to read the Malice, so I didn't open your spoiler. It's right there after my currently owned pile hehe

Let's add Maggie Stiefvater's Raven Cycle (four books, first book is The Raven Boys) - YA, urban fantasy. One of the main characters is gay, though it isn't confirmed until later in the series, and develops a relationship over the series.

And while I'm here, perhaps Genevieve Valentine's Persona and Icon duo? A major supporting character is gay. Not sure how I'd label the series - it's very near-future, with some tech enhancements, so perhaps cyberpunk?

Speaking of labels, I'm not sure about these ones:
Quote
The Traitor [Baru Cormorant] by Seth Dickinson Science Fiction
The Bone Palace by Amanda Downum Paranormal
I would call both of them plain fantasy, actually. They're both completely in secondary worlds, all magic-and-warfare, no high-tech. Downum does have vampires, but it's very much a fantasy world, and I remember the vampires being at least 50% threatening monster, and about 0% love-interest. ;)

Not sure if someone had mentioned this yet, but from the top of my mind are these, (all from A Song of Ice and Fire)

Obery Martell (he's bisexual I think)
Renly Baratheon and Sir Loras Tyrell are both gay.

I recommend:

Shadyia, one of the finest of The Silver Rose's courtesans, is hired to seduce a mysterious scholar by a high-ranking member of the Innocenti, an order of knights dedicated to eradicating the faith of the gods. A precarious assignment to say the least. Innocenti torture whores ("revirginize" they call it) as a rule of thumb. But Shadyia must do this or the order may descend on her entire sisterhood. Added to her troubles is her own past when she killed a noble and a forbidden romance with a fellow sister--either of which, if the Innocenti were to discover, would land her in the dungeons under their temple.

I'm reading my 4th Mary Gentle book now, and I've just realised that in each one there's a female character who lives/dresses as a man (mostly to be able to live and do as they want, since all books are mainly alternate history in times when women stayed at home and did embroidery...).
I don't think they're necessarily trans, but they're good portraits of that way of living - if you're interested in knowing more.

Jesper fahay and Wylan van eck from the Crooked Kingdom duology by Leigh Bardugo. I think the gradual and subtle revelation that Jesper like guys was done really well in this book, painting the scene in a normal atmosphere without too much emphasizing on the LGBTQ point, much like that of a typical man-woman kind of romance. Thumbs up to Leigh Bardugo on Jesper and Wylan's growing relationship.  8)

Thanks to @m3mnoch I have been playing with the list, this should be easier to read now with  Author, book title, book series and sub genre.

Thanks both,  that is much clearer. Please could you either Bold or Colour the Authors so they stood out more above their books and series?
Also please could you now add A Conjuring of Light under V E Schwab ?

Thanks for this, I agree that it helps a lot, but could you make a few changes, please, Eclipse?
(sorry)

* Remove John Gwynne's books from the list (they're in 2 sections) -- it's already on the honourable mention, and it really doesn't have gay characters, once I read the full series

* Rebecca Levene's book isn't really Mythology; I'd put it on High Fantasy, looking at the other names in the section

* Sarah Monette "A companion to wolves" isn't Romance, that could go into Mythology, actually (and it's written by Elizabeth Bear too)

* N.K. Jemisin "The fifth season" isn't really Sci-fi; Low Fantasy, maybe

* Add Mark Lawrence "Red sister" to High Fantasy

Thanks :)
