In the past I've always struggled with short stories, collections and anthologies - I think I just like to get more embedded in a story and have room to wallow about a bit - but this year I've been attempting to read a short story a day in addition to my normal reading (which have included Some Desperado and Tough Times All Over from Dangerous Women and Rogues) and have come to a new appreciation. I'll probably be doing the same thing next year, so this collection should fit into my plans nicely.

No Cover map for the American release. Looks like a Rorschach test with a sword in the middle.

Not bad for an American cover but I prefer the UK version.

I always hear that the UK covers look better than the US ones. and typically the titles sound cooler too.

I think its more that when you get a bad American cover it is far worse than a bad British cover. They seem to be 10 years behind in style as well. Eastern European covers take the crown though. More books are being translated and are available at an affordable price but the local cover art can be atrocious or if you are lucky brilliantly bad.

They're aiming for a different marketing target with that cover aren't they? Looks very modern and thrillerish, trying to get it away from the fantasy cover tropes and make it all edgy to hopefully appeal to the masses.

I'm saying this about the design of the cover and what their aim might have been. They can hardly pretend it's not a fantasy cover, but it gives off a certain look compared to what a general reader would expect of a fantasy.

I think working at a bookshop is best for that - my sister worked for Books etc/Borders for several years and the amount of stuff she got was *amazing*
(don't say that's why it closed down ;))

Hi I was wondering if the character Shev appeared in his earlier works I'm asking as I've got a terrible memory

She's awesome!
I'm Saloninus, by the way. And I tell lies, from time to time. Which goes to prove the old rule; never entirely trust a man who talks about himself in the third person.

Shev appears as an incidental character somewhere, maybe in red country or best served cold I can't really remember, which means a re-read is overdue.

Totally agree, Eclipse. I'd happily read an entire book on one of Shev's many adventures.
I will expand your TBR pile.
