I try really hard to only have one at a time, but I'm not very good at it.

I've generally got a book on the go, a Kindle book on the go and then an emergency Kindle-on-my-phone book on the go. Plus I'm doing a tor.com reread, so that's in the background. So, anywhere between 1 and 4. Eek.

Technically, just one. But sometimes when deciding what to focus on I'll start several books before I find one that sticks. But I do like to focus on just one book, much easier to become immersed.

I have primarily been a one book at a time guy, but have recently decided on a new strategy in order to read as much as possible. Basically, I will have a primary series I'm reading that will be hard copy and kept in my gym bag. Then I have a standalone book on my Galaxy Note 3 for any downtime I have between meetings, when my wife falls asleep and I don't want to turn on the light, etc. Right now my series is The First Law Trilogy and my standalone is Elantris.

Usually three.  My main book that goes to work, and I read as the day winds down.  An audio book for the drive.  And a light read( often Pratchett) on the bedside table for before bed.

This week it will be 2 or 3....

- A Malazan book at home (way too big to be portable)
- A kindle book I started reading during breaks at work last week and will be this weeks 'I've got an odd 10 mins so I'll read something' book
- A paperback that I'll be reading during my breaks at work this week.

At present it's 3, but it's generally 2. At the moment I'm alternating between The Eye of Zoltar by Jasper Fforde and The Six-Gun Tarot by R.S Belcher. Jo Walton's What Makes This Book So Good is on the bedside table and I read a few chapters of that every night.
I will expand your TBR pile.

Just the one, I like to immerse myself in the story.
If I'm reading a second one, it needs to be non-fiction.

One at a time, always. I also like to wait a while once I've finished a book to start another one.

I usually only focus on book and fly through it in 3-4 days. But for some reason right now I am reading two.

I've tried to do two books at once and just can't do it as I don't feel like I get as fully immersed into each of them if I keep bouncing around.  Plus I go through books pretty quick so it's not usually too much of a delay if I have a book ready to read waiting.

I can read up to three but prefer to read one at a time.

I can read 3 or 4 at the same time, but not more than one that require undivided attention.

For example, right now I'm reading a Fantasy book. I wouldn't start 3 or 4 similar books, that would require remembering various characters/settings.

I have one about philosophy/politics, more like a collection of articles/essay about certain themes, so I can read an article or even a chapter or two.
Sherlock Holmes: Complete Edition is mostly a short story collection, so you can also read at any point and don't need to remember tons of characters/plots. It's funny with this one, it has so much content that I read one or two shorties and it didn't even moved 1%. Gonna wait until 5% to update it on GR heh.

There was also a book explaining battles, weapons, armor, historical conflicts, etc.

It's good when you want to read something but don't want to go deep into a story, or if you feel you are going too fast and want time to mull over some part of it, but also want to read something!
Slow and steady wins the race.

I read one main book at a time, and a variable number of supplementary books.

The main book is usually a novel or some kind of single narrative.

I'm trying to read a short story every day, so I usually have one or two collections and anthologies on the go.

I might also have a non-fiction book or two in progress, which I can dip into if the mood takes me but which doesn't really require a lot of concentration and continuity. I'm currently reading On the Map by Simon Garfield, about maps, but I'm not sure I've opened it this year.

And graphic novels/comic collections tend to fit in around everything else.

I think usually two or three. It's rare that I want to read the same story every time I feel like reading for a whole week or two.
