OK, there is a new book out that I have heard nothing about from my normal sources. That now makes me hesitant, maybe it is not what I think it is, maybe it's not really my type of book. Not sure. So, in case it really doesn't warrant it's own topic, I thought I would name this post something else. Maybe it could work out as a place to check recommendations for lesser known books.

Anyway, the book I was looking at is called Something Red by Douglas Nicholas

Anyone heard anything about it? Good or bad or comparisons to established books/authors or styles?

Can't help you with Something Red Arry, but it does sound interesting. I also think having a thread to discuss these sorts of books is a great idea.
I will expand your TBR pile.

I'm actually impressed/surprised. A new book! You get so used to the same names being mentioned here that it's nice to see some fresh names. I'd say definitely read it! Let us know what it's like. Maybe we should have a thread for lesser known author suggestions. Or 'challenges'. Where each of us nominates an author, then others read it and once a certain number have read we can cross that author off the list!

Mods...you listening??? :)

I am. Did we do anything more on the Lion Award? This could all be tied in.

OK, since I cant read Red Country or The Red Knight, figured I would give Something Red a go. Or at least try the sample. So far I am really enjoying his prose. I suspect I will end up buying the book once I finish the sample. I'll post an update if I read it.

I'm going to throw in a recommendation for an odd little thing which they seem to have shelved in YA because they can't figure where else to put it: Chime by Franny Billingsley. I can't really describe it, just that it is bloody brilliant.

Something Red was originally a self-published novel that Simon & Schuster bought after it sold pretty well.

Just as a FYI.

Yes, the Lion Award! Still waiting to here back from Overlord about that. It's a great idea :)

Yep, I flailed incoherently at Elfy when I finished it, and pretty much demanded that he read it so I could talk about it.  And I just picked it up on a whim while shelf-browsing a few weeks ago, and it's going onto the "keeper" shelf, for sure!
