Gandalf, absolutely.

Also, no-one's gone for Merlin - some versions better than others.  Special mentions for the versions in T.H. White, and in the film Excalibur.

Ged - though he's actually described as tawny-skinned.  His friend Vetch is black.

I agree with Merlin! That dude pretty much sets the bar for all who follow.

Isn't Ged supposed to be reminiscent of a native American?

Ged looks kind of native American on the cover of the quartet, but I've seen him drawn all sorts of other ways. The geography of Earthsea is similar to Indonesia or the Phillipines, but the society is totally different. It's hard to really say what Ged's origins are. Interestingly the best Arthurian book I've read (Parke Godwin's Firelord) didn't really feature Merlin.

All I know is that the mini series that was made for Earthsea kinda pissed of LeGuin. She said something about all the cast being white when she never said such a thing, and that they were more red skinned. Though this is from memory, so I may be, and probably am, wrong  :D

Firelord sounds good. Is it worth it?

I've never seen the TV show, but from what I've heard ethnicity was far from the only thing they got wrong.  If you like Arthurian stories, then Firelord is definitely worth it. It's a different take, but a very good one.

I like Quick Ben, The Lady (from The Black Company books), and Elric of Melnibone (who should count as a wizard, among other things).

I've not read the whole thread, so forgive me if I repeat any,
Current fave - Harry Dresden, as I'm a tad obsessed with those books at the moment!

Rincewind, of course. And I did like Farden from Ben Galley's The Written.

Pug from Feist's Rift War Saga is another.

Mine are...

Gandalf from the Lord of the Rings
Milambar (Pug) from The Riftwar and last but by no means least...
Quick Ben (from the Malazan book of the Fallen)

Is this a new trend?  People resurrecting old threads of mine from over 2 years ago!  I am liking it.  And seriously a good way to cover old topics with new posters.

+1 to Gandalf, of course.

I was always a big fan of Raistlin from the Dragonlance books too though. I quite like the fact that he's quite morally ambiguous in a series full of really obvious good and bad guys.
