favorite weapon: a keen mind.

Cheesy/Pretentious much? XDD Jk.

You know, I always want to see a gladius in fantasy. They never have 'em, though, so a Sharp from K.J. Parker's Sharps. xD

considering many authors use idiotic decisions by their characters to drive plot and actions...Don't think it's pretentious at all.  Besides, you're just being a hater because you wish you thought of it.  ;)

gladius is just a short sword...the word is specific to Roman soldiers.

It's a bit of a hint that I want to see more ancient Rome based fantasy. xD

Oh! I've got one. A keener mind than Jef's.  8)

Maybe I'm old-school—or just boring—but I've always been a sucker for an enchanted/magic sword of some type. I think it goes back to Tolkien being the fantasy I read in my early years. When Gandalf, Biblo, and the dwarves found Glamdring, Orcrist, and Sting I wanted one of their swords very badly.

There have been far too many magical swords to try and mention them all here, but there are some highlights I suppose:

Belgarion's sword, the Sword of Shannara, the Vorpal Sword, Excalibur, Amoracchius, Dragnipur, Twinkle and Icingdeath, and many more.

Making things inaccessible to Macguyver is easy. Just make sure he can't get hold of a length of string.

Or a paper clip. And you have to make sure he doesn't have one on him when he goes in the cell.

And Stormbringer  8)

You know, it occurs to me that, although I love swords, I can't recall ever having written a single story where a character has a "special" sword, certainly not one with a name.  I'm not sure why.

Talking about swords, I'd forgotten about the Shard Blades. They were awesome and there is something dark about them.

You read my brain and my mind. Yes, they are separate entities.

A very cool weapon, i'd give up my family for a shard blade.
I saw them on the shores
the deepening pits of their gaze
vowed immortal war
against the sighing calm
of Jaghut seas . . .

I'm always partial to a warhammer or axe. It could be because the bearer is usually a huge insane barbarian and they are pretty fun to read!

Terminus est from book of New Sun.

executioner's sword. double bladed. one side used for men, the other for women. Has mercury put into into a hollow channel into the blade. beautifully ornate.

That or magic. specifically fire magic used in entertaining ways.
The world is a weird place, lets keep it that way.

Dragnipur is the coolest single weapon.
