Favourite Characters:

Ibram Gaunt - Gaunt's Ghosts Series by Dan Abnett

I always liked Harlon Nayl in the Ravenor/Eisenhorn books

Echoing the Vimes love too, and I want to be Nanny Ogg when I grow up :D

Liked Mr Gamgee - hey, Frodo couldn't have done it without him - but, and I'm not sure I can 100% articulate why, always had the hugest soft spot for Eomer.

Harry Dresden, oh and more recently read, Sandman Slim. Because I do love a smart arse lol.

As for hate... Thomas Covenant, but maybe that was the point, Of characters I'm perhaps supposed to like but didn't, hmm, I can't think of too many, tbh.  Mostly, apart as I say from people I'm probably supposed to not like, most have just underwhelmed me. Sometimes to utter boredom/putting down the book, but I can't say I hated them.

Been thinking about most hated characters, and basically any poorly written female that would put the female rights movement back a hundred years if she really existed.  You know, the type that is initially portrayed as a street smart savy young female, before turning into a simpering mess as soon as a young dashing hero with a humongous broad sword appears.  Or any female that exists purely to be raped, or nearly raped while wearing revealing clothes.  So a lot of nominations from Peter V Brett and Robert Jordan.  *Big round of applause and a pitiful look for the wives of both*  And extra applause for Old Bob for having females who love spanking and humiliating other females in the buff.

and Sparahawk from David Eddings with his annoying habit of making mental notes as if he is actually an office manager from Slough not a freaking fantasy hero.

Mmm too many favourites. Vimes, most of the Marines in Malazan, Rincewind, etc etc.

Characters I hated? There weren't a lot of them, mainly when they are badly written I want to skip ahead. Some of the Aes Sedai makes me want to sacrifice an eye, they are so stupid. When characters do something so plainly idiotic it makes me groan and I actively want them to die.

Oh and Kvothe. The smarmy, smart ass, lute playing, casanova that he is. I'd love for him to start to suffer in the third book.

I don't know that I hate those characters - I pity them.

I may not feel so generous about the authors though.

Getcha, I just hate the fact that some *ahem* incomprehensible rude name *ahem* has bought them into existence.  I heard Terry Goodkind is a bad culprit too.

I sometimes think I can hear their little voices 'Please, let me kick this guy right in the koalas'. :D

I hate the fact they an author feels they need to exist in such a way, and that it's still so prevalent even now in SFF(you know what century we're in, right guys?) but the characters didn't ask to born, bless. (yeah they can be annoying, but I;m not annoyed with them, but with who is portraying them/decided this was a good representation.)

Fair enough, not all woman are kick arse fighters or whatever, but gods alive, they can show a bit of moral and emotional fortitude. ETA: this doesn't mean they have to act like men either. Women who act like women but still aren't simpering doormats would be nice.

I know it's OT, but I just love the above statement fiercely.

Harry Dresden - Jim Butcher's Dresden Files - Bad ass, funny and a thinker
Matt Cauthon - Wheel of Time - My favorite character period, same as Dresden but just so perfect in so many ways. He makes the series for me.
Tyrion Lannister - ASOIAF - A dwarf who kicks ass, bags the ladies even if he pays for them, has no qualms about getting revenge on whomever, whenever. Has same qualities as the above.
Durzo Blint and Kylar Stern - Night Angel -These two are almost like the same person at times - Quotes to die for
Jorg - Prince of Thorns - Have to love this antihero
Harry - Brian Lumley's Necroscope - A man who talks to, learns from the dead, and is cooler than cool

Hated -

Perrin - Wheel of Time - I have the power but I don't want it. I'm a leader but I don't want to lead. For 11 freaking books. Need I say more? *Head > desk*

Love hate relationship -

Kvothe - can you get with the chick you've been chasing for two books already? I mean to learn the most intricate aspects of lovemaking that would drive a fae wild then NOT use them? *shakes head*

Sorry but Rand has to top the list.  "I'm going insane.  With great power comes great responsibility.  I can put men in harm's way but not women.  A women died because of me.  Oh poor me.  I'm going insane.  I lost the battle.  Throw things around the room and be petulant.  Pull a good deed out of my arse.  Make love to one of the three beautiful intelligent women that dote on me.  Wonder if I am going insane.  Plot cleverly.  Sulk in my room.  Am I going insane?" Arggghhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hated
Bloody Nine - First Law Trilogy - an utter B*stard
Samwise Gamgee & Frodo - just so irksome and whiny really really annoyed me.

But Rand had an excuse. He had a dead man running around in his head and the Power WAS driving him crazy so he got a pass. Perrin had none.

I'm actually with both of you here! Rand and Perrin both drive me nuts. Mat Cauthon is by far the best character in that series, or any series/book for that matter :)

Shadowthrone from the MBOTF, simply for the way he schemes - and cheats. Plus his actual motives...

As said before, Vlad Taltos. Only read one book in the series and I love the character - someone who keeps up with an apparently superior race other than by being Mary Sue-ishly, abnormally gifted/powerful. Let me just add: *cough* Eragon *cough*

Petyr Baelish, for reasons I simply can't explain without spoilers. ;)

Harry Dresden: amusing narrator (very referencial, which I always love), occasionally an antihero, and generally wins out by using his talents interestly. (And destructively, of course). Also the sheer amount of development he gets.

Most hated?: I rarely dislike characters if well written, but author's darlings like Richard Rahl get on my nerves.

Another character I like is Bronn but that is based purely on Game of Thrones TV Series.
