Has this been done before?

Who are your favorite characters in all SFF and *why*?

I didn't answer because I find it impossible to break down to a few because there are so many and depending on my mood I'd favor different characters. Sometimes you need some who resemble you, sometimes you need the ones not like you but how you like to be.

I can maybe say that I find characters from Terry Pratchett and Tamora Pierce to be the most lively/real.

There are so many. Outside of SFF it would probably be Harry Flashman. Tellingly, not a lot of modern characters (last 10 - 15 years) make my list.
I will expand your TBR pile.

Sam Vimes. Wonderful mix of cynic and idealist; what you could maybe even called a tarnished romantic. There's oodles of character depth to look at and he gets an awesome range of funny moments, awesome moments, and "daw" moments.

Hmm.

Candidates: Tyrion Lannister (brilliant small person), Mile Vorkosigan (brilliant smallish person), Samwise (loyal, courageous small person), the Gleems (@Elfy’s creation; very short)...

Is there a pattern here?

@JMack, mate! You have just made my new year and that of the Gleems, they wish you and Mrs JMack a ‘hap’ ‘py’ ‘new’ ‘year!’ Most of my favourite SFF characters tend to be on the short side, too.

Locke Lamora and Jean Tannen. A proper 'bromance' the likes of which I haven't read much of in fantasy. I could happily read their conversations and bickering for 600 pages at a time. I just wish Scott Lynch would get on with publishing Gentlemen Bastards Book 4 so I can do just that!

I also really enjoy Eddie Dean in The Dark Tower series; as well as Sand Dan Glokta - the awful but captivating slime ball of the First Law.
Check out my book 'Prince of Fiends' here: http://amzn.eu/4l5M7OO
Follow Prince Leon Atlantus as he forms a dangerous friendship with his captors, while held hostage across a world headed for war...

So many. Mara in the Empire Trilogy, Pug in the early books (Magician), and Nighteyes of course :)

All of them moved me in different ways.

Probably the only Scifi book I've ever read, but probably Spin from Skyward. She's definitely me as a kid (minus the 'vengeful Valkyrie speeches' part)  ;D

I almost forgot, Miles Vorkosigan in Lois McMaster Bujold's great sci-fi series. Thinking about the character makes me want to read the series again!
