Title: Fantasy recommendations like Bernard Cornwell
Post by: Beynon88 on October 14, 2019, 10:20:00 PM
Hello everyone!
Have been reading these forums for a while and liked the community vibes so thought I’d put a question to you all. I read a few different genres, but have had a lot of recommendations from this website and forum.

My Dad wants to get back into fantasy after watching Game of Thrones (he did not get on with the book version)
His reading tastes are action, military and is fine with colourful language.

His favourite series are The Saxon Chronicles, Sharpe Series and he also like Simon Scarrow Cato and Macro. I remember he did use to read David Eddings when I was younger which I’ve heard is not what I’ve described above. Thanks in advance.

Welcome!

The Black Company might be a good fit.

Welcome to the forum! :)

If he likes historical fiction, then he might enhoy Miles Cameron's books, since he also writes historical fiction as Christian Cameron.
I also think that John Gwynne's books (starting with Malice) might be a good fit.

Maybe Brian McClellan's Powder Mage trilogy would be fitting? He likes the Sharpe series, after all. I personally found the Grail Quest series by the same Bernard Cornwell to be excellent, though they are lesser known than the Saxon Chronicles.

Thank you all for the welcome and recommendations!

Looking forward to trying a few that are mentioned (The Black Company looks like something he would like, and Malice I have had in my rather large TBR for ages )

Hopefully one of these we can read through together then  :D

If he likes the Sharpe series then he'll probably like The Last Kingdom by Bernard Cornwell. The books in this series are light, easy, and fun just like Sharpe.

Yes he’s read pretty much everything from Bernard Cornwell, some non-fiction too I believe.
