oh!  and i meant to say too -- the wife is in for a trip to the u.k. next summer.

it'd be awesome if it was june/july.  that way, we could fly the kids to the grandparent's house.  tho, i suppose it'd be cheaper to just fly grandma down to ours...  hrm.  so, whatever!  we're there!

p.s.  psst, jmack -- that 'hrm' is a sound effect, not an abbreviation.

"her regal mistressness"
"hey, reality mouse!"

@ScarletBea I was about two rows from the back, next to a pal I dragged along. He has a beard, I have glasses. You tell me if I'm in them???

But yes, it has only been since about May that I've been frequenting the monthly comps and getting to know folks. I find the whole concept of meeting online peeps irl a bit scary to be honest, but I'll try to overcome that for the sake of the Con!

On topic. Glasgow. May. Gets my vote.
@Saurus and I met online. It can be scary, but it can be awesome too!  ;)

Yeah, absolutely epic.

Once upon a time, the princess Saurus was being held captive high up in a tower by her evil... uh... wait. Was that it?  :o

Fantasy-Faction Convention Team:

Hi everyone, looking to put together a Fantasy-Faction Convention team. Essentially this will be a UK based team who will bounce ideas off each other in order to make sure that this upcoming convention of ours is the best damned convention the UK has ever seen.

Mostly it will involve scoping out potential venues, discussing authors we'd like to invite, coming up with panel topics, designing other events for the con, and much more besides. If you'd like to be involved then please let me know here and I'll get back to you on how we move forwards! :-)

Already had one very enthusiastic forum member reach out to me (and glad he did, cause he knows his stuff!) - be great to have a few more.

Had a thought whilst I was out walking tonight - amazing what inspiration I get doing that sometimes - concerning venue/dates. I know a lot of venues/dates were put forward here and on Facebook but I wonder about a lot of these put forward for earlier in 2016.

We're in August now, any sizable venue - I'm thinking hotels/convention centers - tend to have dates booked a year sometimes two in advance. Getting anywhere between January and May/June that isn't already booked could be hard. Not saying it would be impossible but leaving the venue/date open for too long could narrow down the possibilities.

Not wanting to put damper on anything.

It would be great to hold the event in February or May 2016, would love this to be a weekend event as well.

In terms of location how about somewhere central like Birmingham or Leicester? Just a thought.

Yeah this kind of stuff would be really useful to know.

Some comments:

When: still think early summer would be ideal.
Where: Manchester please!
Events: I really liked the sound of the socialising aspects of the Grim Gathering (the party after, and the breakfast the next day), so I do think it'd be great to have opportunities to do that for this as well. One thing that would've been awesome would be some kind of award ceremony for the F-F Book Battles, but since everyone will already know who won it wouldn't really make sense...
Food/bar: I don't think there should be any - or at least none included in the basic ticket price. It's pretty unlikely that we'd be able to/want to eat the stuff provided, so it'd be a waste. A city center venue (like Manchester Library) would mean there'd be enough around to suit everyone.
Merchandise: we would be happy to help create some cool merchandise if anyone's interested. A good place to order them from would be aliexpress - incredibly cheap yet very good quality in our experience, the only downside is delivery times, which wouldn't be a problem here since there's a lot of notice.

In the UK to have a Bar you need a licence or Licenced premises. Food preparation areas need to meet hygiene standards and be certificated. I really wasn't suggesting free food and drink. That path is the one to madness and bankrupting the event.

3rd party liability insurance is another for the list as is budget are you looking for commercial success or to break even, monetizing advertising space is another way of raisng funds.

I assumed you meant something like the con making a deal with certain restaurants/bars/pubs, rather than actually preparing food there. My viewpoint was that it probably shouldn't be dealt with by the con whatsoever, and people should just look after their own food themselves. Ideally the venue should be close to an area with food shops and the like, but even that's not essential imo as long as there are breaks long enough for people to go eat.

It would depend on the venue, but this is an important stream of cash for big events. Don't write it off just yet.

Yeah I guess. As long as it's not included in the ticket price then I don't have a problem with it.  ;)

In addition to Rostrum's list is the idea of the con to make money for the site or is the aim to raise money for other causes? I've been to a few independent cons and apart from one (which used the money to fund future events) all of them donated any left over cash once all expenses cleared to a charity.
