Title: Do you get any strange comments when admitting to reading fantasy books?
Post by: Eclipse on December 16, 2019, 01:44:37 PM
A lady in the Facebook group said when she told a person she read fantasy books it’s because she’s escaping from an abusive lifestyle and using fantasy as an escape from real life. As women wouldn’t read fantasy otherwise.

Scary to see so many closed minds about.

Just thinking does this only happen in English speaking countries?

I have to admit I keep my love of fantasy books mostly here. I only admit to reading fantasy books to someone if I feel comfortable with them.

You know that fantasy is used for eroticism in Turkey.

As for fantastic books, many regard them as childrens' book. That's one of the reasons I prefer to read e-books instead of hard-copies. I do not  need to justify my own taste for the books.

Other than that, I haven't heard any comments such like that but Turkey is not known for its lust for fantastic books :)

Deja Vu glitch in matrix? I swear I've seen this content before.  ;D

But as Iso said, most believe fantasy are for kids and YA. GoT (TV series) has done wonders into changing this perspective, but still reading fantasy borders on nerd kingdom.

When people say I read fantasy to escape reality, I am quite bemused. That to me is very much the point, and in fact is the definition of fantasy.

I don't care about any potential looks I get. It's their loss... ::)

There are book fetishes who are show off-s. They put everything they read on Instagram and consider themselves higher than the rest

^ I assume you mean they do that with a different attitude than what we do here in the "what are you currently reading" thread, right?

I'm not sure about Portugal, of course, but given that Fantasy seems to be growing in shelves on bookshops, it might not be so badly regarded.

I don't believe I've encountered this even once. I know people who don't read fantasy, but not someone who will criticize or scorn the genre. I'm old enough to remember when SF was dismissed as rayguns and BEMs, but that was already fading in the rear view mirror when I was in my teens. For point of reference, I'm sixty-eight.

Not since I graduated, no. But since I don't read in public, and only talk about books online or right next to the fantasy section in bookshops, that's to be expected.  ;)

Before GoT, I used to get a variety of "that's weird escapism / just dragons and wizards / just sexy vampires / for kids / I don't get it" comments about reading fantasy.

Since GoT, people just ask me for recs. :D

Escapism is exactly what I read for. never really been bothered about what anyone thinks of what I read as those who tend to comment negatively obsess about football or the lives of b list celebs or soap operas and don't comprehend that is also escapism.

The popularity of the show did definitely make it less unusual to see people reading fantasy.

I was more caught by the idea that they're okay with children reading Satanic books :)

Now that you mention it, I don't think they realised what they said, English is a second language to them maybe they got the grammar incorrect.
Title: Fantasy as a Perversion
Post by: NedMarcus on December 21, 2019, 01:16:15 AM
"It's perverted." "It's escapist trash." I've heard many comments like this. And I know of one person who stopped reading fantasy because of them.

Once when I was reading a fantasy paperback someone asked "What's that?" as if I was holding decomposing animal. They could clearly see the cover. I answered "It's a book," and just got a blank stare.

And from an independent bookshop in the UK, "We don't sell that sort of thing here!"

I doubt if it's just the UK though. I've seen similar attitudes around the world, if not specifically about fantasy. I've never had a satanic comment though—that's something to look forward to.

I went to a tv site to see reviews of The Witcher

Comments were along the lines of only nerds love dated sexiest fantasy tv series.

I don't 'admit' to it, I say it. It's not a crime.  8)

I have little to no patience for people who make snap judgements about an entire genre based on some stuffy preconception. So I either ignore them, or I slowly and deliberately explain to them why they are wrong to judge.

When people are of the horrible misconception that all fantasy/sci-fi is trash, I like to inform them of how storytelling works; that at its core it's about the people who experience something and change as a result, and thus it can be done well or poorly regardless of external matters like the setting.

If a religious person cares to comment on the fantasy I read I will usually gently shut them down fairly fast by making comparisons between their book and mine, both tend to require suspension of disbelief and I know mine is fantasy.

When someone starts throwing words like satanic, devient, trash etal you can guide the conversation into 'oh what should I be reading then?' before using the arguement above.

Except the satanic the satanic one is great thats a 'you really are an idiot to believe what the controlling idiots said about everything they don't like, can't explain within their narrow viewpoint or are uncomfortable talking about. You need to read some books'
