They're mostly for fun, although you don't have to scratch too hard to see the underlying seriousness in some of the topics that they touch on, but they're also short and they do contain all sorts of magic and that is anything from Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. There are over 40 to choose from and they vary in what they focus on, it would be a hard reader that couldn't find something that they liked there.
I wouldn't call it short by any means, but Raymond E. Feist's Magician fits the bill on every other count, and despite it's length it's quite readable and is also a good entry into the epic fantasy genre. You may also like Alan Dean Foster's Spellsinger series, although I'd recommend stopping with the original series and not bothering with his attempt revisit it later on with Son of Spellsinger and Chorus Skating. Ben Aaronovitch's Peter Grant series is also quite good, it's set in the modern world as is most urban fantasy, but they're not overly long, and they deal with the application of magic in our world. First book is The Rivers of London (retitled Midnight Riot for the US market)
I will expand your TBR pile.
