Characters with mental health disorders?

Inky got me thinking after I named Piglet in a different topic.

Can you name some characters, I’m thinking of

Auri from Patrick Rothfuss
According to some,* heroic deaths are admirable things

* Generally those who don't have to do it.Politicians and writers spring to mind

Shallan from Stormlight Archives probably had some multiple personality disorders, I think. Also Kaladin from the same series had some sort of PTSD.

Misread this perhaps - did you mean issues like schizophrenia, drug addiction, paranoia, etc., only? Or did you also mean people with mental disabilities?

Renata Ghali's mental health complexities are done so well in Emma Newman's Planetfall.

I feel like Mary Robinette Kowal does good work with Vincent's depression across the Glamourist Histories series. And I hear she does similarly with anxiety in her most recent books.

+1 for Planetfall. The first book that sprang to mind.

The bloody Nine does he really 'Hulk out' or just think he does?

He really does, unless I got really confused. A lot of others dislike/distrust him for it.

I always read that as a berserker analogue, though now I am curious about the real causes/underpinnings of berserkers! Wikipedia suggests it might have been a combination of ritual/psychosomatic mindsets and substance use (possibly matched with a natural tendency, i.e. you choose youngsters who exhibit rage issues to take on this role) but there's also a note about the similarity observed with some PTSD sufferers.

They're comics, not books, but the Batman and Moon Knight immediately spring to mind.
I will expand your TBR pile.

Don Quixote

You know I'm really tempted to make a list of characters I've read that are typically thought of as sane and diagnosing mental illnesses in all of them

Sorry i could have asked that better. The Bloody Nine obviously earned his name, but is the idea that he is a mild mannered and compassionate person who rages/beserkers out into a super human monster his way of compartmentalizing his difference in behaviors or is he really taken over by a force over which he has no control?

Give Micheal R Fletcher's Beyond Redemption some thought it's a very Grim(dark) tale of madness and belief set in a world shaped by madness. If you utterly believe in something  you can make it happen.
