Book questions - what shall I get?
« on: June 17, 2015, 06:00:25 PM »
I'd like your input, and might as well create a thread where everyone asks.

So, I'm going to buy book 2 of the Ryria Revelations, but Waterstones doesn't have 3 (which I'll get from Amazon) - but I need a second book to get a stamp on my Waterstones card (every £10).
I was looking at my TBR list, and realising I don't want to buy an unfinished series yet (so Malice is off) and looking at what's available, what shall I get?

1. Rebeca Levene, Smiler's Fair - I know this is book 1 of an unfinished series, but I've read it from the library, really enjoyed it, and now it's out in paperback I wonder if I should buy to keep/re-read in future
2. Joanne Harris, Gospel of Loki
3. Aidan Harte, Irenicon - a series I really want to read, but this one doesn't have any discount at the moment hehe
4. Robin Hobb, book 1 in the next series I haven't read, Fool's errand

So?
(I know I could toss a coin, and actually writing these down made me almost decide, but this is more fun ;D)

I vote Fool's Errand... but then again you knew that I would do that anyway.

I've only read Smiler's Fair on the list (I didn't quite get the hype around it), but I'd get one that you haven't already read. I went for The Gospel of Loki, because I think that's the most self contained of the 4, and it's also one I've picked up a few times myself, but not yet taken the plunge with.
I will expand your TBR pile.

Haven't read any of these so I closed my eyes and after 4 tries my finger finally landed on a selection.

Gospel of Loki was quite good -- and really different from what's being written today.  And it's a finished series of one book, so no sequels to buy (or worse, wait for).

Thanks all!
I might get Loki for now, being a standalone and me still finishing Riyria.
And this way I know when I finish these 4 (the 2 Riyrias, Loki and a Temeraire from the library), I'll definitely get the next Hobb series :D

I've read The Gospel of Loki last year and really enjoyed it. Smiler's Fair is looking at me from my bookshelf, still unread, and I haven't read the other two as well, so Gospel of Loki it is  :D

I picked Gospel of Loki, I liked her other stand-alone that I read (whose name escapes me at the moment  :)) and I've been thinking of picking this up when it comes in "regular" paperback.

I have Irenicon in my in-tray. Sadly, I'm not quite able to offer a judgement yet. (Also, is that series complete?)
