Title: Book Bargains
Post by: Arry on January 27, 2013, 12:18:02 PM
When I see current bargains on really good books, the first thing I want to do is share that information with my friends here. I have either created new threads or posted randomly in the past, but have decided a common 'bargain' thread could be useful.

What prompted me today? The Kindle version of Joe Hill's Horns is an Amazon daily deal in the US (and only $1.99). This one has been on my TBR list, so I'm happy to have found it discounted :D

I'm hoping others will share deals they see here as well.

Great thread! Could we maybe actually sticky this and put it in Fantasy Book Discussion?

After reading someone recommending David Dalglish last night I went and looked him up - turns out the first in his "Half-Orcs" series - The Weight of Blood - is free in the uk Kindle store. FREE!  :D

I noticed Red Knight in the Inverness one for that price a few weeks ago - madness! It's brand new!

I was just wondering earlier if there was any decent Richard III historical fiction!

Oh oh actually, taking a look at it, I believe this was recommended to me a couple of years back, and 74p for a 950 page novel?! Fantastic. Snapping this one up!

I realised I haven't let you guys know about the site I like to check daily for freebies (those who follow me on Twitter might occasionally catch me rambling on about bad covers or how awesome X book sounds).

http://www.kuforum.co.uk/free_ebooks/latest/

It has options for UK Amazon and US Amazon as well as other different search options. And if you'd like to search for multiple genres simultaneously just shift+click. It has found me a lot of potentially interesting reads! :)

Carrie Vaughn's earlier Kitty Norville books are now available as box sets - there is a five book version and an eight book version.

(See here on Amazon for eight book
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Norville-Collection-Midnight-Washington-Holiday/dp/B0053HDGCO/ref=sr_1_23?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1361025875&sr=1-23)

Makes the price per book a bit lower, especially with the eight book - currently just under £32.

I like Kitty the werewolf books - she is someone who is infected with lycanthropy by accident and builds on this with a radio show called the Midnight Hour - call in show for people with supernatural problems and questions.  Each book tends to be a story in itself, with ongoing story arc on Kitty's life through the series.  Sometimes the main story comes from the show, other times it turns up by surprise.
One of the radio show ones is Kitty trying to find famous people from history who were lycanthropes.

It's Strange Chemistry's first birthday and they're offering seven of their ebooks for 99p/$1.99. Most of them are already 99p, and some will be that price from Monday 26th:

Blackwood, Shift, The Assassin's Curse, Poltergeeks, Katya's World, Broken, Pantomime.

Out of those, I've read Pantomime and would strongly recommend it. In fact, I recently reviewed it here on Fantasy Faction.  :)  Leo has also written a recent Fantasy Faction post about young adult books and Strange Chemistry.

Could it be because where you're based? I think the sale was only for those in the US (or with their kindle set to the US). In other countries the price is set by the local publisher. I know in Australia prices are utterly ridiculous, twice or three times the normal sale price than what the usual price is in the UK or US... sales are a bit different, though.

Hence why I'm in the UK, I buy up while I can :D

I live in Belgium with a Kindle set to the US store...I pay VAT taxes (or something like that) but I still don't understand why it's that expensive for me. Amazon's prices remain a mystery to me :P

Huh, that's weird :\ My kindle is set to the US, and I get US prices. Hrm. Maybe check your kindle settings under 'Manage my Kindle'? Mine's reverted back to Australia a few times, though I'm not sure what triggers it.

Another saving, this time for the Kindle/amazon store in the UK - Glamour in Glass by Mary Robinette Kowal is £0.99! http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00BZ5JNOS/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=fguk_tw-21

Got the press release on that, quite a bargain if you're after that many books in one hit. Good thing about AR is they really are wildly diverse, so not like you will be getting anything but a huge amount of variety.

Is everyone aware of Read an Ebook Week at Smashwords? Loads of books are marked down, some to almost nothing if not free. You can filter to see just Fantasy or Science Fiction books too. I always check both as a lot of Fantasy authors are putting their books in scifi to get away from the Romance authors.

I've not seen it mentioned elsewhere on FF, so I guess I'll do the honours.
The Humble eBook Bundle 3 (https://www.humblebundle.com/) runs for another couple of days.

The Happiest Days of Our Lives (Wil Wheaton)
Tithe (Holly Black)
Jumper (Steven Gould)
Zombies Versus Unicorns (Various)
Mogworld (Yahtzee Croshaw)
Uglies (Scott Westerfeld)
The God Engines (John Scalzi)
Bleeding Violet (Dia Reeves)
Arcanum 101 (Mercedes Lackey and Rosemary Edghill)
To Be or Not To Be (Ryan North)
Homeland (audiobook, Cory Doctorow)

I haven't heard of most of those authors, but the Humble Bundles do tend to be quite good collections I think.

Not sure where to put this, but have been in one before and picked up a few bargains.  And some that weren't but that was own fault. Due to start soon, depending on your time zones.

If only all the bargains worked in Oz.  Even lots of SFF Audible isn't allowed here because of publishing /recording rights in different countries.  I was happy because at long last Memory Sorrow and Thorn is coming to Audible.com. I pre-ordered DragonBone Chair straightaway, then later received new email to say I couldn't have it because I lived here. :'( :'( :'(

I still can't get kindle bargains even though I have Amazon US and UK. I'm only part of "Rest-of-World "for some things  :(

We need a "buddy system". One of us orders the book where we are, and sends it to the other. Payment back to the originator via PayPal.

Sorta related: has anyone tried borderlinx? Got a marketing email from Paypal a while back about it, and it's really tempting - though we haven't really taken a look at the pricing. Basically it's a company that provides a physical US or UK address for you and cut shipping costs, so you can order stuff from amazon.com or .co.uk even if it wouldn't normally be available outside the country. Sometimes tech stuff is half the price in the US, so it might actually be worth it sometimes. Might have to if we want something that's a lot cheaper in the UK/US.

Great thought and would work if it was books, but it's audible the biggest problem and you can't send them to someone else. :) I can get any books I want earlier than here often, and not even pay Amazons huge o'seas delivery costs, because I go to Book Depository who deliver free.

So I don't even need borderlinx either.

Jmack, did you try out that special audio package you mentioned some time back and if so, how did it go? Can't remember the details.

I've never read any Sanderson (a potential sacrilege on this forum really) and thought I might try Mistborn, but I can't really afford to buy any more...also my library has books in the Mistborn series, but not books 1 or 2! Rather frustrating.

Hi everybody. Hope I am not breaking any forum rules posting this here, as I am the author.

My first novel, When Destinies Collide, is available for the kindle free, on a special promotion until the end of Tuesday. The offer is for all territories.

Amazon UK: http://amzn.to/1Odv2jj

Amazon US: http://amzn.to/1PUNZHy

About When Destinies Collide
The shred of parchment Richard Bymoor holds in his hands is tattered, worn, and centuries old. Such a little thing—but the thirty-four-year-old king of Driniri senses it has the potential to devastate kingdoms, especially when neighboring Raimar risks war by attempting to steal the relic.

Forced to confer with his estranged brother Markus, Richard and his trusted mentor William Coleburn discover the parchment piece is one of ten tied to an ancient power that could lay waste to Driniri. Raimar seeks this power—and is preparing for war.

Outmanned, Richard and Markus decide on a desperate course of action. While the Driniri army runs interference, a small strike force led by the brothers braves the unknown lands, flanking the Raimar forces in an attempt to assassinate the Raimar leader, Lord Gamil.

But something is lurking in the unknown lands, a force that could bring a swift end to the brothers’ quest. And even if they make their way to Gamil, the Raimar leader is heavily defended. To succeed, Richard and Markus must accomplish the impossible—or Driniri falls.

Saga Press has put a lot of their ebooks on sale for $2.99.

Here are some of the titles included (there are more. I did notice not all of them show up in the B&N list for some reason)

Grace of Kings by Ken Liu
Cold Iron by Stina Leicht,
Blackbirds by Chuck Wendig (if you haven't read this one, it was a book club read a couple years ago),
Lagoon by Nnedi Okorafor,
Silver on the Road by Laura Ann Gilman,
Criminal Magic by Lee Kelly,
Six-Gun Snow White by Catherynne M. Valente
The Gospel of Loki by Joanne M. Harris
Our Lady of the Ice by Cassandra Rose Clarke

However, The Stone Road is free for the next few days to celebrate the release of the third and final book in the trilogy. That means you can get all 3 books for 4$/£/Euros. Pretty damn cheap that!

I hate to admit it, but I really haven't read that many of Saga's titles yet. They are a new imprint, so that doesn't help, but still. I have some catching up to do. I have read Grace of Kings (http://www.amazon.com/Grace-Kings-Dandelion-Dynasty-ebook/dp/B00KU4O1CY/ref=sr_1_5?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1454620382&sr=1-5&refinements=p_30%3ASaga+Press%2Cp_n_feature_browse-bin%3A618073011&tag=tenacreade-20) and all the Miriam Black books. Love all of those, so I recommend them. The Miriam Black (http://www.amazon.com/Blackbirds-Miriam-Black-Book-1-ebook/dp/B00RM266YS/ref=sr_1_8?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1454620382&sr=1-8&refinements=p_30%3ASaga+Press%2Cp_n_feature_browse-bin%3A618073011&tag=tenacreade-20) books are very sardonic, which I love, but not everyone does.

For titles I have not yet read that I really want to because I've heard good things about them:

Lagoon (http://www.amazon.com/Lagoon-Nnedi-Okorafor-ebook/dp/B00O65X836/ref=sr_1_9?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1454620382&sr=1-9&refinements=p_30%3ASaga+Press%2Cp_n_feature_browse-bin%3A618073011&tag=tenacreade-20) (I read Okorafor's novella Binti and loved it, so have been wanting to read one of her full length novels)
Cold Iron (http://www.amazon.com/Cold-Iron-Malorum-Gates-Book-ebook/dp/B00O65ZYZG/ref=sr_1_7?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1454619207&sr=1-7&refinements=p_30%3ASaga+Press%2Cp_n_feature_browse-bin%3A618073011&tag=tenacreade-20)
Criminal Magic (http://www.amazon.com/Criminal-Magic-Lee-Kelly-ebook/dp/B00Z7BA02K/ref=sr_1_21?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1454620482&sr=1-21&refinements=p_30%3ASaga+Press%2Cp_n_feature_browse-bin%3A618073011&tag=tenacreade-20),

I know some people that have read Six Gun Snow White  (http://www.amazon.com/Six-Gun-Snow-White-Catherynne-Valente-ebook/dp/B00TBKUW6C/ref=sr_1_12?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1454620382&sr=1-12&refinements=p_30%3ASaga+Press%2Cp_n_feature_browse-bin%3A618073011&tag=tenacreade-20)and absolutely loved it. I haven't decided if it sounds like quite my thing yet

I don't know that I'm much help! Too many books that I want to read :)

The Miriam Black (http://www.amazon.com/Blackbirds-Miriam-Black-Book-1-ebook/dp/B00RM266YS/ref=sr_1_8?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1454620382&sr=1-8&refinements=p_30%3ASaga+Press%2Cp_n_feature_browse-bin%3A618073011&tag=tenacreade-20) books are very sardonic, which I love, but not everyone does.

For titles I have not yet read that I really want to because I've heard good things about them:

Lagoon (http://www.amazon.com/Lagoon-Nnedi-Okorafor-ebook/dp/B00O65X836/ref=sr_1_9?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1454620382&sr=1-9&refinements=p_30%3ASaga+Press%2Cp_n_feature_browse-bin%3A618073011&tag=tenacreade-20) (I read Okorafor's novella Binti and loved it, so have been wanting to read one of her full length novels)
Cold Iron (http://www.amazon.com/Cold-Iron-Malorum-Gates-Book-ebook/dp/B00O65ZYZG/ref=sr_1_7?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1454619207&sr=1-7&refinements=p_30%3ASaga+Press%2Cp_n_feature_browse-bin%3A618073011&tag=tenacreade-20)

Our Lady of the Ice (http://www.amazon.com/Our-Lady-Cassandra-Rose-Clarke-ebook/dp/B00TBKUW8A/ref=sr_1_15?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1454620482&sr=1-15&refinements=p_30%3ASaga+Press%2Cp_n_feature_browse-bin%3A618073011&tag=tenacreade-20) (I have this one, just haven't gotten to it yet)

Thanks, Lisa.
Bought 6-Gun and Blackbirds.

Though it may have mentioned elsewhere, I also want to add that A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet was recently shortlisted for the Arthur C. Clarke Award. Which is awesome!

I heartily recommend it. And as a bonus for any fans of Mass Effect, her universe has a very similar feel to that series. Lots of interesting and original alien races working together, and even a segment that feels like it could be a straight up from a Mass Effect 2 Loyalty mission. Good stuff.

There's also a first-in-series sale on, which includes:

Hounded - Kevin Hearne
Pawn of Prophecy - David Eddings
Magician - Raymond Feist
Queen of the Tearling - Erika Johansen
Theft of Swords - Michael J Sullivan

and a few others, mostly at £1.99 for the ones above.

(I thought Blood Song was part of this sale too, but I see it's actually the Daily Deal, so today only, whereas the others will be on offer for over a month.)

Pornokitsch has a giveaway over on reddit, pretty much donate or volunteer to whatever charity speaks to you for a chance to win

Quote
Earlier this year I published a 75-copy limited edition of Daniel Polansky's The Builders. (Now a Hugo Awards finalist!) It is a lovely hardcover edition, illustrated by Howard Hardiman, and signed by both author and artist. The edition is well-and-truly sold out, but I've still got two copies left.
Give to a charity, let me know in the comments, and you're in with a chance to win. A few suggestions:
Red Cross[1]
The Trevor Project[2]
Pulse Victims Fund[3]
Or... any other vetted charity of your choice
Please share which charity you choose, and why - cool to know what causes make you tick!
I don't care how much you give and I don't need to see screenshots or proof or anything (I trust people not to game the system at times like this!).
Alternatively, if you give blood or volunteer, let me know, and you're in with two chances. (If you give blood and donate, three chances. Woohoo!). As above, if you're volunteering, let me know where and why - that's a really cool thing, and want to hear more about it.
Plus, everyone that participates will get free Jurassic London ebooks - including A Town Called Pandemonium (a Weird Western anthology featuring Sam Sykes, Will Hill and many others) and The Book of the Dead (an anthology of mummy-inspired stories, with Gail Carriger, Jesse Bullington, Paul Cornell and more).
[T&Cs - I'll ship anywhere in the world. I'll do the drawing after 1 July, midnight (UK time).]

Everyone that participates gets some free ebooks (Free Books for Doing Good!!) plus a chance to win the signed limited edition of the Builders!

Apologies, hands up made a mistake and didn't spot the previous post. Not sure the sarcasm is necessary. Posting in good faith something that might be of interest to other people in a non-linear thread, thereby causing no possible problems is clearly a heinous crime deserving of snide comments. Job of moderators not to help and encourage posting from newer members or you want to keep a closed club?

The "sarcasm" and "snide comment" is your assumption and interpretation. It was meant as a friendly reminder.
I know that things like this aren't easily made clear in text form (and especially not on the internet) and I apologize for this.
This is a very friendly forum. The next time you aren't sure how something is meant, please don't assume that it is something snarky or mean. Chances are high that it is not.

Both me and @ultamentkiller (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40103) are the big Weeks fans around here ;D

And yes, that book is the first of the second series (5 books), which I think is better than the first (Night Angel, that Raptori mentioned).

I really enjoyed it, but that could've been because I read it in Graphic Audio. I'll never know though. The best part about that trilogy is no matter how many times you read it, you always catch some foreshadowing. And Brent Weeks is the master of foreshadowing, without ever letting you know he's doing it. Hell, he flat out tells you some of his biggest plot twists, but most people just ignore them. Like me.

Light Bringer is definitely superior though. Most people who haven't enjoyed it either struggle to grasp the magic system, can't handle Kip, or don't like the prose. I love the magic system, I grew up with Kip, and I hardly care about prose. So I love it.

The first Night Angel can feel very rough to read at parts and the beginning might be a bit slow, but it does flow well after that. The two sequels are big improvements. Although the resolution sucks hard with a massive deus ex.

More than a year since I read, also when I was beginning to focus on Fantasy, so not sure how I would think about it if I reread it...

Ok, from what I see:

Stranger of Tempest - Tom Lloyd
I haven't read this one, but I quite like all his other books

Twelve Kings - Bradley Beaulieu
Lots of people here praised this one, I bought it in paperback but haven't read yet

The house of shattered wings - Aliette de Bodard
Great and different

Gospel of Loki - Joanne Harris
For a different funny take on norse mythology

Red Knight - Miles Cameron
A ton (really) of POVs, detailed military battles (he writes historical fantasy under a different name and he does reenactments)

I would give Sam Sykes and Edward Cox a try too.
No comments on SF or urban.

Loved Twelve Kings. Was also going to mention House of Shattered Wings.

In addition to these:

NOS4R2 by Joe Hill
The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski
Dreams and Shadows by c. Robert Cargill

I haven't read them yet, but have heard really good things about the 2 Sarah Pinborough books. I've been curious about Mythago Wood, but haven't read it yet. Also Relic Guild.

House of Shattered Wings and Luna made it. On the fence about 12 Kings. Finding it hard to get into epic fantasy these days and still have a couple of unread epics on my kindle to read.

This is why more people should read House of Shattered Wings!

Well worth a go for something different at that price. ;)

Well ultimately I bought 5 potentially brilliant books for £4.95. So well chuffed.

Twelve Kings by Bradley Beaulieu
The house of Shattered wings by Aliette de Bodard
Fireman by Joe Hill
Sharp Ends by Joe Abercrombie
Luna: New Moon by Ian McDonald

Do you have different books on offer @Arry (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=8809)?  As these were not on offer in the UK!

Quote
NOS4R2 by Joe Hill
The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski
Dreams and Shadows by c. Robert Cargill

I haven't read them yet, but have heard really good things about the 2 Sarah Pinborough books. I've been curious about Mythago Wood, but haven't read it yet. Also Relic Guild.

@Nighteyes (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=272), you could always go with The Cold Commands, I know how much you loved The Steel Remains. ;)

We don't have this sale at all, I went to the audible.co.uk site to look at the list. Though sometimes, having an IP address from another country can still mess up what you see. This is what I see when I go there:

ETA: just realized you were probably asking about the Gollancz sale, and I was looking at the Audible sale! Doh! :) turns out they had a number of the same titles. For the Gollancz sale, the only one not mentioned so far is The Falconer. I really enjoyed that one. A bit more romance than most of the books I read, but fun story. And I absolutely loved Twelve Kings, not sure why it has t gotten more attention/love.

New book by Duncan M Hamilton "The Wolf of the North" is out on Kindle at £0.99 (or I believe $0.99 in the US). Well worth seeking out whether you have read his previous books or not. A shift to a northern (clue is in the title) facet of his world. Reminded me strongly of David Gemmell's Rigante series, which for me is a welcome reminder of my misspent (i.e. reading fantasy books and playing Championship Manager) teenage years! I enjoyed the change in setting and the overall feel of the book. Some very Gemmellesque (that's a word right?) themes of enforced coming of age, anger, betrayal, calming effects of love etc. I am already itching for the continuation of the series.

(as a disclaimer I did have the privilege of reading it as an ARC)

Yeah, I went in, my hair stood up, and I fled. I'm not wasting the money I didn't spend - going to read and enjoy it on my terms, circle back, and note how wrong everyone was  ;D

I will be interested to see the politics (at this early stage it looks like there's some intrigue coming), and how you managed it. Odd that I enjoy it in fiction and detest in life.

Proper old school sci fi and fantasy!

Was about to tease some of our older member and then realised that there will probably be a similar deal on 20 or 30 years of fantasy and sci fi books I love and some whippersnapper calling it 'old school' fantasy and sci fi.

If anyone's still interested in reading it, my first fantasy novel, Glyphbinder, will be free on Amazon from Wednesday, June 27 until Sunday, July 1.

It has action (involving explosions), adventure (dodging explosions), blood magic (which causes explosions), demons (which sometimes explode) and a volcano (that explodes too). There's also feelings (and then more explosions).

You should pick it up for free, if you don't have it. You know, if you like that sort of thing.

I think they might have fixed the omnibus pricing today. Certainly the one I had on my wishlist had gone back up to 13.99. The single books still seem to be 3.99, and in fact maybe more of them have dropped to that price as of yesterday.

Not any more, I don't think. For the big five (are there still five? I forget) the price is set by the publisher so they must be taking the hit.

The way I see it, it's more between me buying the book or me not buying the book, and the first is infinitely better than the second, even if the second is only pennies.

Yup. If it wasn't a lot better for the publisher too they wouldn't be doing this. And I'm going to guess its better for the authors too, even if its really annoying, although I don't know what royalty price they get for discounted e-copies anyway.
