Leviathan by Scott Westerfield. Steam Punk about WWI being fought with GMOs and other futuristic tech. The airship at the center of it all is a GMO sperm whale built by the British.

+1! Loved that whole series and especially the arc with Grianne.

What happened in the later books hit me especially hard because of that...

I quite enjoy the later books, but they're not as good.
