Okay, I now expect to be disowned and eviscerated here on F-F. If there was still Karma, I'd plunge to -20. Come on, have at me.  ;D

You're kidding, right? You just made my day, thumbs-up from me. :D

I'm glad you draw the line somewhere you book reading slob extraordinaire! You

Well, I don't fold, and I don't write in my books.
I do dog ear.

I've been known to spill. And have you ever eaten potato chips while reading? Crumbs get between the pages and make little oily dots, plus the paper gets raised from the bits of salt. You have to go back through the pages to find the offending crumb and sweep it off. And then there's another.

I do use books for all manner of convenient tasks: propping windows, smooshing down curled paper, and - yes - extinguishing jar candles. What can I say?

No boogers, @Eclipse. I'm not even sure I'd recognize one. :p  ;D

All of the above plus not returning them when they have borrowed them.

I got a library book where the swearing and sex scenes (nothing particularly raunchy, James bond I think) had been highlighted which was weird and I have heard of library books being censored by the extremely religious (or religious extreme) variety but not highlighted.

Sticking pages together. With luck they use gum, otherwise that alternative...

I once read a book from the library that some girl must have really liked. She'd left red lipstick kiss marks all over some of the pages.

I take care of my books (in fact I once loaned one to a friend at work, he read it and returned it, then asked me if I'd ever actually read it, because it was so well looked after that he couldn't believe someone had already read it, clearly a book abuser). I used to dog ear pages when I was a kid, then I read somewhere that you shouldn't and invested in a book mark. So mostly what bugs me is people not looking after the book, and that includes all the stuff already mentioned. However I do let writers scribble on the front pages of their published works.
I will expand your TBR pile.

Well, I wouldn't mind that too much. :D

I suppose this one isn't something done TO a book but done WITH a book. Nothing annoys me like having someone come by the house, pick up the book I'm in the middle of, and start reading it. That's the equivalent of walking to my husband and flirting with him while we're standing next to each other. If a book is not on the bookshelf, then clearly we are currently in a committed reading relationship and touching it is the height of rudeness.

Don't even get me started on the person who then inevitably asks to borrow the book, and who I know will be incredibly offended if I say no.

Yup, you know which of our books are really loved by the amount of wear-and-tear to them.  ;D  Although, some of the ones with wear-and-tear were pre-loved before we got them.

Even some of my old books barely look read, and some of them are between 50-70 years old, so they should be.

To get back onto topic - my biggest peeve is not respecting a book that has been borrowed from someone else.  "But it's just a book" was a comment I got once from a no-longer friend.  Well, actually it isn't.  It's an important part of my childhood, and one of the few books my dad ever bought me without me asking for it.  :(

The number one thing I hate is people eating sloppily while reading. When I was in third grade, my classroom had a small library comprised of books from our teacher's personal collection.

She would lend the books to us on an honour system but asked us to take care of her books.

I opened one and there were chocolate stains everywhere. Even as an 8-year-old, I felt such anger that both that book and my teacher had been disrespected.

So even though I'm a neat eater, every time I pick up a physical book with food in my hand, I think back to how angry I was and end up putting the food down.

I might start projectile vomiting everywhere.  :'(

Years ago, when I got my thesis back from being marked, there were crumbs of chocolate scattered all through it. But I was ok with that, because I figured having a happy marker could only be good for my grade! :) Still speaking academically, I used to find it useful when I got a book out to find that someone had already highlighted / underlined passages in the chapters I was looking at. Of course, I never knew what grade they'd received on the essay, so maybe I was being led astray...

I am a very, very careful book owner, though I have to balance that with taking the book I'm reading everywhere with me - no matter how careful I am, things get jostled around in my bag and some dents are unavoidable. But yes, I am one of those persnickety people who can read a paperback without creasing the spine.

Haha. I just don't understand people who destroy books.   The book should still close and not have a broken spine when you're done.  And if it's not yours you should return it in the same condition you borrowed it in. :P

I admit I'll dog-ear the very, very corner (no words damaged)  - or, I used to; I don't anymore much, but I only write in non-fiction books. That are mine. :P

And yeah, if you don't return books, I don't loan them to you anymore.
