Thanks for the feedback!

I think having a forum on one's own website really only works once you have a following - there's nothing worse than a forum with only a couple of threads and the faint rustle of tumbleweed :)

Sounds like I should stick with my current strategy and just make better use of social media sites like FB and Goodreads to boost traffic.

As Cory Doctorow says, the problem for most writers is obscurity, not piracy.

That's a brilliant quote  8)

I’m not really bothered about looking up authors website for bonus content. I hardly look up my favourite author websites anyway.

I put up articles on my blog about my stuff a bit and other stuff that I read or otherwise think about, along with all the usual book deets. Then, for those people that are into the work, I offer a newsletter.

I get very few things that I can give away. I used to be on Facebook, and would announce giveaways there and on twitter and there'd be loads of people who I don't believe had any interest other than winning something taking part. Then there are those who are actually waiting for my next novel to come out...which still blows me away. It's those people I'd like to have giveaways for, or give them exclusive or 'you heard it here first' news.

So those that are into my work get a bit more than those that don't. But those that don't can still get info about my books and me rabbiting on about stuff. Hopefully it works, but it's been an interesting thread in regard to the general sentiment here.
