The Bonehunters: finished
« on: April 18, 2014, 04:51:23 PM »
Why did that fucker Shadowthrone didn't heal Kalam? What will happen now that he's in the Deadhouse? And did Shadowthrone really healed Quick Ben and left him alone? Not really convinced he'd do this.

And Apsalar... Over 300 Claws? Really? Something not even Cotillion could've done? How?

Didn't saw T'Amber being possessed by the Eres'al coming. All the time I thought she may be Lady Envy or somebody similar.

I don't get the Empress, seriously. Korbolo Dom and Mallick Rel couldn't have become powerful again without her wanting it, so why should she suddenly fear them and want Kalam to get rid of them? All in all, she must be awfully clever or made some big mistakes because I can't see how blaming the Wickans, empowering those two traitors, killing Tavore and outlawing the fourteenth Army is going to achieve anything.

Grub creeps me out, what is this child - another Elder God?

So Withal/Foreigner, maker of Rulag's sword, made it to Malaz City and married Sandalath Drukorlat, who are now both with the Bonehunters. Will he destroy the sword he made?
What does Erikson have against marriage? The ones he depicts (Iskaral Pust and Mogara, Withal and Sandalath, Kalam and Minala, ...) are all a bit strange and challenging. Wouldn't surprise me if Hellian and Banashar will suddenly be married too...

So Heboric is/was? not the Destriant but the Shield Anvil. Do we know more about the Jade pillars filled with souls now? No. :P

What will Apsalar do, now that she's free and believes Cutter dead? (Besides getting drunk.)

I wonder if Icarium or Karsa will fight Rulad first or if they'll fight each other first...

It's great to see that Fiddler has again a fiddle and to actually see him play it. Great scene. And the one where he plays a game with a deck of dragons is really great too.
Stormy is shield anvil? Huh? To which god? What does this Imass know, that nobody else does?

That Oponn was blasted from the tower was funny. "Never mess with mortals."  ;D

It's cool that Corabb is now part of Fiddler's squad.

I just read Fiddler's game again and the King of High House Shadow brings Kalam to Obelisk. Obelisk is Burn and Burn sleeps, so is Kalam on Hiatus now? Like Rallick Nom in that other Azath House?

I don't get the Empress either I Honestly don't know what she's playing at she's supposed to be a tactical genius so hopefully there's an explanation later on, I think I Understand Shadwthrone better then her. I think Shadowthrone healed Quick Ben because he wants him to do something for him otherwise he would just kill him wouldn't he?

Fiddler with the song was Great , I read the Deck of Dragon scene more then once

I'm glad Corabb is alive, Who would have thought from the first time we see him he would end up with Fid.
Erikson is just great at making up all this different characters and personality's nobody is a copy of someone else

Hellian stopping the assassination attempt I found it really funny also the pub she visited with the demon bar man was intriguing

I liked reading about Ahlrada Ahn

Quick Ben holding off the elder sorcery on the ship with some help and also holding off   Icarium for a time and listening in at Hood's Gate  :o Quick Ben awesome but we all know that already  :)

Squint and Apsalar talk to each other  :(

Pust Mule is getting more mysterious to me

ooh Paran made a deal with Hood

Lostara shows mercy to Pearl

Before I forget Cotillion is searching for a barber  ;D

Oooh...Tavore now has her own army - The Bonehunters, who have now been joined by a handful of Rake's offspring, which kind of offsets the loss of Nil, Nether and the Wickans. A force to be reckoned with...and now all deserters from the Malazan Army....sounds familiar  ;)

The conversation between Tayschrenn and Kellanved was intriguing...who is the Emperor's child? And why should he fear for him/her? - I guess if we knew the answer to the first question, the answer to the second would probably be obvious!  :D
There was a reference to Temper straight after that....but that could be a red herring??

Also...we now know that Tayschrenn has been playing his own game throughout...he is still a priest of D'rek. Although quite what the implications of that are is anybodies guess at the moment...we don't really know a great deal about D'rek.

Aww Apsalar. I hope she has a chance to be happy....but I wouldn't be surprised if she changed her name and went freelance....possibly returning to Darujistan for a while...I'm sure Kruppe would find her useful to have around :D

Felt really sorry for Cotillion after the battle with Icarium and the Edur for the throne....but who will he use to guard it now?

Trull was amazing...might have been a match for Icarium if his spear hadn't started to splinter.

The Gral got a bit of a wake up call...he's beginning to realise that this is all a lot bigger and way more complicated than he expected. And that he is in way over his head. Dumbass.

What did the Eres'al do to Icarium??...she healed him?....what does that mean? Is he no longer cursed? He feels refreshed, hopeful, a soft welcoming warmth ...but will that make him a better weapon for the Nameless Ones to wield or useless to them because he will no longer let himself be played...is he now more dangerous than ever?? :o ???

Mappo...a gesture of kindness and support and a few words from Cutter, and the poor guy is in bits  :(

Hellian is hysterical...chucks herself overboard cos she's thirsty, happens to spot the priest she wants to interrogate and manages to nab him, stumbles into the only bar on the island run by a demon, and spends the entire evening getting pissed and missing the whole riot. Priceless.  ;D

Stormy is shield anvil? Huh? To which god? What does this Imass know, that nobody else does?

Maybe he inherited the Shield Anvil role from Breed when he accepted possession of the sword - Breed was/is the last of his clan so he may have been carrying their sorrow/pain??

Pust Mule is getting more mysterious to me

Was wondering if it was related to Kruppe's mule  ;) ;D :P
Although it is clearly not just a mule...some kind of soletaken?? or maybe a D'Ivers - in which case Kruppe's mule could well be part of the same creature... :P

Grub creeps me out, what is this child - another Elder God?

Really?? I like Grub :)
...his three 'friends' were Orb, Sceptre and Throne...currently all unaligned players in the deck...I think he has access to a God or Elder, even if he isn't one...ooooh!! could he be the Emperor's child??!!

So. The mystery of T'amber has been revealed. Sort of. We still have no ides what the Eres'al are hoping to achieve.
Just how many Eres'al are getting themselves involved? Is it just the one?...because Bottle is communicating with a pregnant one, but the one using T'amber and the one that showed up to heal Icarium and Onrack wasn't described as being pregnant... so there could be two or three?? If it is just the one then that kinds of lends support to my time travel theory....

ooh Paran made a deal with Hood

Yes...very curious about that!
And it was very interesting that Laseen mentioned that Dujek's army had disappeared...Does she really have no idea that Paran is now in charge?...and that he has incorporated Mathok's army into his?...if she doesn't then she will soon enough because they are heading for Aren... so, will Korbolo Dom then take charge and dismiss Paran?... will Paran be ordered to hunt down his sister's army? will they now become deserters too? join the Wickans to fight the Empire? follow the Bonehunters?  ??? ??? :D

I’m a bit all over the place at the moment as I had a big gap (at least in terms of the pace we have been reading!) between the last time I picked up The Bonehunters and finishing it last night. So I will forget lots of stuff.

I think my favourite scene in Part 4 was Quick Ben rising into the air as the Jade statues seemingly came crashing down (or whatever that was) and then finding out it was an illusion (AT FIRST – ah, Bottle, you little scamp, you).

There was something really magnetic about Tavore by the end of this book. We barely know anything more about her (despite knowing loads about her siblings) and yet, just like her Bonehunters, I think she inspires loyalty even in the reader by this point, and I don’t know why. For someone so enigmatic, she’s written really very well. If you look at the typical epic fantasy model, Tavore and Ganoes would be our main protagonists with the roles they play in the overall story. And yet, we only really know one half of them.

Anyway, can’t wait to see more of The Bonehunters themselves. They’re like a slightly darker version of the Bridgeburners, and it’s a lot of fun to see a group like them at their inception.

Hellian was hilarious – definitely one of my favourite new characters.

The final 100 pages or so was typical Erikson – frantic, shocking and impossible to put down. Kalam/Tavore/T’amber’s storyline was the centrepiece, though. I fucking love this guy’s writing. Seriously.

As always the sappers provided lots of comic relief in what was a horrifically dire situation at the docks. I was sad to see Nil and Nether leave – really hope we see them again.

The final chapter was chaotic. That ending, with Cotillion, head in hands, was heartbreaking. Cotillion was an absolute scene-stealer throughout the book, and finally we got to see that just because he is a ‘God’ doesn’t really mean much as a character. He’s still vulnerable and as Erikson keeps reminding us – never underestimate mortals.

The Bonehunters all in all felt like both a convergence of plotlines (with the Letherii/Tiste Edur coming into play with the Malazans) and also an ending. It seems as though we may have seen the last of Seven Cities at this point. I think Ganoes and his army are the only ones left and they are leaving too. I’ll be sad to see the back of it if that’s the case – I remember reading Deadhouse Gates and being sad we weren’t on Genabackis, and yet now it feels as though the centre of the action has been Seven Cities. It looks like we’re off back to Lether…

Re: Kalam – I think Xiagan is correct that he is out of action for now, but I also think he may be the Ascendant that will become the new card in the deck – Knight of High House Shadow. Though at the moment it's Trull...

They must have something on her. Does Laseen have any family we don't know about? Has to be something.

Loved that scene. I also loved when we met them properly, albeit briefly. Apart from GotM they've always remained kinda ethereal - good to see they are out there.

I was hoping for more of Tayschrenn. Maybe from Esslemont...

Me too! I mean, he is odd and a bit creepy, but his scenes are great! Especially as we know he will eventually be First Sword...

Another sublime entry in this series, then. It is very difficult at this stage for me to deny that Steven Erikson is creeping up the list of my favourite authors. Very, very quickly.  :)

After a marathon reading last night (so tired today...), I finished.
Did I say wow before? WOW!
(warning: exclamation marks excess ahead ;D)

Looking at my notebook I have 3 times more comments than the previous books!
I'll just copy them in order, this is useful also for when I need to remember in the future hehe

* Finally we see Malaz City!
* So both Icarium and Karsa are on their way to fight Ruhlad?

- Sometimes I think my memory's too bad to fully appreciate this series. I keep reading things (names, events) that I feel I've heard before and should trigger revelations and conclusions, but there's only a vague sense of recognition, they pass me by because I can't remember the past: argh!

* Deck of dragons with a new House! Done by T'Amber: who is she??
House of War and Treach and Icarium and Heboric and the Bridgeburners all there!
Bottle spying hehe, is he one of the unknown on the Deck?
* Wow the Edur magic on the ships with 100 warlocks, and Quick Ben faces them all! Go Ben! Bottle trying to help, but is anyone else there? (comment after finishing: maybe T'Amber was helping too, right?)
* I'm loving Karsa's disdain for the Edur, his supreme confidence -- later 'someone' mentions that the Toblakai create their own warren, is that what happened when Karsa got near to Samar Dev and she could suddenly breathe well again?
* I'm also loving Cottilion in this whole book, so much more 'human', or rather, we see a lot more of him and his motivations than just 'fight, fight, influence'
* Everyone's at sea:
-- Edur fleets, Karsa and Icarium --> to Edur land
-- Malazan Imperial fleet --> to Quon Tali? Malaz City?
-- Cutter and team --> to Otataral island
-- Iskaral Pust and Mappo --> to where??
-- Paran and army --> also to Otataral island??
* Ooooh what is it that Hood wants and Paran said he's do?
* Meteorites/asteroids! - oh, they're the souls of Fener faithfuls, did they fall because Heboric was near or was it all a coincidence? Heboric the Shield Anvil, not Destriant!!
* Argh, Paran so close to her sister's adopted daughter and to know it was her, and now he's moving away... that family... in the end it also seems Tavore will never know her role in her sister's death...
* Oooh Shadowthrone fooling the Edur with the illusion of the throne being destroyed!
* Those Tiste Andii that appear in Malaz City, mention of the fight and the Traveller, that's the event we read about in House of Chains, right? On an island?
* The game!!! I don't think I understood everything (were we even supposed to?), but Knight of Shadow Tiste Edur has to be Trull Sengar! -- afterwards, oh yes it was!
* Gosh, so many pieces being played at the same time! I LOVE Malazan convergences, Erikson is a master!

- This book was published in 2006, so written in 2005 at the latest, yet Laseen's speech on truth, how it's malleable and subject to revision, is exactly what the world has been seeing in the last couple of years! Visionary Erikson...
"In the minds of the people truth is without relevance. (...) The very will of the people can revise those truths, can transform lies of convenience into faith, which isn't open to challenge."

* I was hoping no one important would die.. oh Kalam :( --> afterwards, yay to Shadowthrone and taking him to the Deadhouse!
* Apsalar killing Pearl and 307 Claws! And Shadowthrone saying she's even better than Cottilion! Go girl!!
* T'Amber an Eres'al!!! Or used by one!
* Lostara now helping!
* The battle at the First Throne!! Wow Trull Sengar vs Icarium! Had we seen Icarium unleashed before? So bad... Who calmed him, was it the same Eres'al that possessed T'Amber?
* Quick Ben, wow! He's everywhere!
* Ending with continuing spying and conspiracies.

Definitely on to Reaper's Gale :D

Edit: after reading your comments, I see lots more that I also noticed but didn't write down. And other stuff...

Oooh picking up the next book I can't see many names: Paran, Apsalar, Cutter... On the other hand, we have Tehol and Bugg ;D

Reaper's Gale has one of my favorite scenes in the entire series.  Also contains one of my most disappointing scenes too so I'm anxious to read what you end up thinking about those events when you get there.
